It is ironic. The use of a country or piece of land in a descriptor for a channel or a gulf tends to be used from the standpoint of the larger or mire significant nation to refer to the lesser of the two lands. Hence, the English Channel because it separates England from the much bigger mainland of Europe. The Irish Sea because it separates the smaller Ireland from the bigger Britain. It doesnt connote ownership quite the opposite in fact.
