SAN last week. Reserved Intermediate class, received a Mustang. That made my round trip drive from San Diego to LA and back pretty fun!

Received: Hummer H3
I arrived at the DEN Avis location and my name was on the board telling me to come into the counter. When I got in there I was informed that they just didn't have any cars. The agent type-type-types around and is like, "Um, ma'am... would you feel uncomfortable driving a Hummer?" I was like, "no, not at all!" In fact, I'll confess to you that I was pretty excited to cruise around in a big-a** truck for a weekend. The counter agent had to hike out to the back forty to get it ("we just don't have many cars" he said), and pulled it up for me. I drove off pretty giddily.
Then I realized that the truck *bleeds* gas. With gas at $4, no wonder the Hummer was still available.
So I guess it was really cool to get an upgrade to a specialty vehicle (never had that before), but after a day and a half, I was only too happy to turn it in and let the panicky feeling of watching the gas gauge go.

Same here Intrepid. I'm in SEA this week. Reserved an Intermediate, but was given a Ford Expedition. I passed on that one and they gave me a Saturn Aura instead.

I got there and they didn't have anything full size when I went to the Preferred booth. He said I could have "anything from this row here" as he pointed to a row of cars. I had a few great choices: Aveo, Cobalt, Mustang, Sonata, Jetta and a few other (sub) compacts. I asked for the Sonata and was told it was already assigned to someone. I asked for the other Sonata that was parked right by the booth and was told that wasn't available either. I then asked for the Mustang, but they couldn't find the keys for it. I said, "fine, whatever keys are laying by your computer, I'll take that so I don't have to wait forever." It was the Jetta, which sucked, but oh well. When I checked my e-receipt, they still charged me for a full-size, even though I was downgraded to an intermediate. I emailed customer service requesting my refund; we'll see how that goes.

I probably should have followed your wise example. They even asked me if i was okay with it. I was temporarily blinded by the coolness of the Hummer.

Received: Mitsubishi Eclipse with 10k miles ^
Note: *Everyone* was showing nothing available, and even my coworker was like "oh, we'll hotwire it".. i grinned and said "whatever, I got it thru Avis" for $64.00 a day (was a one day rental). He's never used the preferred type car rental service (claimed he always has) and was shocked to get dropped off near the car and go.
all I gotta say is, thank god the cops didn't clock me driving around Atlanta.. i was doing over 100 mph and didn't notice!
Location: Kona
Status: Avis First
Rented: Compact
Received: SUV (can't remember model/make) ^
I found out from friends that Hawai'i *always* oversells cars.... and the preferreds always get a 2 - 4 class upgrade!

Received: Dodge Magnum...an ugly car if I ever saw one.
Went back to the counter and was given a choice between an Aura, Eclipse, Mustang and Hummer H3. Took the Eclipse with 1500 miles on it.

One day I will recieve a double upgrade at PHX. Well.... I take that back. About a year ago, I used to get the double upgrade to the Lincoln Town Car. Now it's just been a one car upgrade to a Buick Lucerne, Chrysler 300 or the Mercury Grand Marquis

The only negative was that it was a little tight having two suitcases.
