As of 2/12/14: We've had quite a few "Hey, come use this AWD. It's great" type of posts. When the AWD doesn't give a good discount, but is only posted to try to get renters to use the AWD of someone so the poster can earn free days from their Avis Corporate account. From here out, please put the company/trade group/etc that's associated with the AWD or we'll delete the post to keep it on-topic here.

Hi,
I am trying to get a decent rate for a mid-size or larger in Kona,Hawaii. I have tried the big rental sites, priceline, hotwire, and some of the codes on this forum but the cheapest is a base rate of $76 for 2 days.
Details on what I'm looking for:
Any rental Company
Midsize or larger
May 15-17,2006
KOA (Kona airport, Big Island, Hawaii)
If anyone can help I appreciate it, I really don't want to pay $30/day for a midsize.
Thanks.

Not quite sure what this has to do with Avis discount codes, but...
$76 all-in for Thrifty and Dollar looks to be about as cheap as it gets those days. You could always check their websites to see if there are any better deals, but most coupons and whatnot are for weekends, not mid-week rentals.
You can also try bidding on priceline a little cheaper than that. Try bidding for a full-size at around $22/day. That works out to about $63 all-in on PCLN. It'll probably be rejected, but I can't imagine you're going to get much cheaper than that for a mid-week rental.

yes
yes, 75$ ALL IN with the taxes on kona is good. I think there is a 3-5$ a day surcharge there, so that is something. Plus taxes, fees, airport renevation charges etc.
Last time I was there, in April, I paid 165$, 195$ after taxes and fees for a full size week. When I arrived they were stating walkup was 35$ before taxes and fees, so that would have been more.
personally, for that amount, I wouldn't even do the PCLN dance.

$75 is good rate.
I have a weekly at Maui and that is $190 for a economy, or $220 for a midsize. So your $75 is not a bad rate at all.
I would not go PCLN or hotwire route because of the insurance credit card provided. There is a high probability you may incur damages in Hawaii rental - break-in is not uncommon, for example. You would not get the benefit of credit card rental insurance should you go PCLN route.

I did some checking for you (i live in Kona) and found that 30 a day for midsize is about the going rate for the "better" rental companies in kona. At this late in the game, your better off sticking with that. When I drove by Alamo yesterday, ( a friend came into town), the line was out the door. Thrifty was so so, National was busy. Budget was busy, Avis was pretty empty as well as Hertz. So in retrsopect, you may get what you pay for. Long lines and cheap rates. Short lines and slightly higher rates.

Damn.
I read further (duh
) and you have to join a chapter. They would know it was me.
I could deal with that but then it is $20 membership to get the "Purple Perks".
It looks like you can be a member of the "virtual" chapter, though... Hmmmm.. tempting.

Too long have I lurked without thanking you all for the excellent work done here. There is a code that has constantly beated the BA Exec code at every level and which is always a great deal cheaper and that is D086553.
My husband (aka Him Indoors) has to rent frequently in Europe and this code has always beated everything else. I recently tried the much vaunted T111949, D0005927, and B149870. All were about the same for 9 days in Italy and all of them were about 50% higher than the D086553. Whilst I never stop shopping around I am well pleased.
Thank you again.

I do agree with you, but a word of caution regarding the D086533; as ezmonee has pointed out, this code is probably allocated for a limited number of rentals throughout a year for a certain corporation, and violation can (and in my instance have )been/be tracked.

Also, the corporation in question would be, I guess, Marshall School of Business. Why would be only a certain number of rentals allocated to this code? I know, for example, that my bank has a negotiated AWD code (I think it gives 15% discount or so) and this was done to bring down rental costs and thus encourage a greater use of Avis rentals, not the other way around.
