mauld, I received an invitation to Preferred Select because of CO Platinum status, too. I'm already Select though. I think Avis is conferring the status in at least two ways, through special invitation due to airline status and to people renting the specified number of times.

After reading about Select on this thread, I called AVIS and asked at the beginning of summer about upgrading my Preferred since '97 to Select status. The agent told me there was a "freeze" on issuing new Select status due to a high number of rentals that were upgrading during the summer. I asked if she could see the number of rentals I've had so far in 2000 (probably around 20) and that I could put a "freeze" my all future AVIS rentals until I was made Select. She promised to get back with me, in fact, did leave a message the same day and sent me the Select package within a week.

I was asked to call back 3-4 days after my ninth rental return. I'll update the post to let you know how I did.

I turned in my ninth rental. Four days later I called the Avis customer service line. The first person I spoke to didn't know how to upgrade me to Select. She suggested that I call the "wizard" department the following business day.
Rather than waiting until tomorrow to speak to a bearded man with a pointy hat and a crystal ball, I called back and asked the new operator for the Select treatment. She asked for my number, tapped a few keys, and told me that my card was on the way.

I called Avis Special Services and was told that there would be no more Pref Select for "a while" and that I should call again in a few months.
When I picked up my rental yesterday, I asked the agent about Pref Service. I was told that all it basically means is that you get a full size car. She asked if I wanted that on my profile and I said "YES!!".

I just called AVIS regarding the Preferred Select program. According to the person I spoke with, the program is still available. The requirement for the status is that you have 21 rentals per calendar year to qualify and 21 rentals per year to maintain the status.
The number I called was 757-687-2570.

Going through a huge stack-o-mail I just opened a nice f/c letter from Avis. It sez "...as a Onepass member you have been selected to enjoy Avis Preferred Select, our premium level of Preferred Service. This complimentary membership is by invitation only.....". One car upgrade, free WSJ etc.
It thus doesnt appear to be a very exclusive club, but it is certainly alive and hopping. I had about 2-3 Avis rentals over the past year or two.

I got my card and experienced the new perks during my last rental. I was Select from the AX Platinum offer and filled out the form, etc., but never got the card. I called months later and they fixed it and sent the card. On my first Select use, I was upgraded from subcompact to premium, a nice savings.

There is a level above Select (President's or Chairman's Club or something like that), but the only way I've heard of getting it is through the AMEX Centurion card ... though I'm sure there are other ways.

Called today and asked to be put to min. of Preferred Select...which was no problem.
I asked about the next tier, President's Club or something. Your company must have a corporate acct. with Avis & spend atleast $25k/year and you need to be CEO or something close.
I told them I am Hertz President's Circle...which seemed to make little difference to them.
Anyone experience different?

Seems that this is still around, just got my renewal even though I don't rent much from AVIS any more.
Advantages seem to be:
automatic one car upgrade
prefilled forms
Preferred reservation line
members only website.
Seems that the only item not offered to regular preferred is the last--no big deal.
