Membership to the Presidents club is by invitation, and is usually reserved for the high flyers of corporations who do a lot of, well, high flying.
I have never had any special treatment from Avis, save for the rapid checkin to get my car. Never an upgrade. With Bluechip, I used to get the odd upgrade.

I have been a Preferred member for a long time. And rent about 30 times a year - but never heard about Select status. I read about Select on this site and called Avis. They said, "You should have been Select long ago. We will send you out a card right away." I inquired about Presidents card and they said someone would call to discuss. I did get a call, but need to call back as not in office at the time.
Not sure if Select will help me on upgrades. I get them about 50% of the time anyway.

I've just got off the phone to Avis Preferred Select, the qualification was...
Notice the 'was', well the 'Select' part is not taking new members, the program was too popular.

I seem to get the same ability to upgrade as before.. it seems to be very much at the descretion of the agent.. in PDX (Portland) we have the same person every sunday, and now I get PARK AVENUES or CADI's once in a while....
FUN!!! So make a good relationship!

Not taking new members? Well, I just got a card in the mail totally unasked for, just out of the blue. As a matter of fact, I often don't want upgrades to bigger cars. Hotel parking can be so tight that I often prefer a smaller car just to fit into parking spaces.

TravelWeary: If the Preferred Select CS is still taking new member then I'll be applying. Free upgrades are always nice and the 40 a year rentals I get will be that little bit nicer. If you here they are please let me know.

I seem to recall from the Black Card Redux thread from a while ago that one of the Centurion cardholders said that President's Club membership was one of the perks of the black card.

Yes I got into the Presidents Club thanks to my Black card. I have yet to try it since Avis hasn't sent me the card yet. I'll post something after I give it a try.

One thing I have been noticing on my UA balance is my AVIS miles and then the PREFERED SELECT BONUS for the same mileage. I am wondering if this is a UA promotion or does Avis ALWAYS give double miles for Prefered Select? I am not complaining!

OK. Here's the latest as of the date of this posting. Preferred Select status is given--on request only--to those who have 9 rentals in a six month period. Apparently it doesn't matter how many days you rent, just the number of times. Also, the person I spoke with wasn't quite sure about this, but it appears that the six month period is a rolling window.
I was asked to call back 3-4 days after my ninth rental return. I'll update the post to let you know how I did.

Sorry, Mikey Likes It...but I would have to disagree with the Select critera. I just received the invitation in the mail, and I rented only once (that I can remember)this year from Avis because I almost always use Hertz. I've been a CO Platinum, so perhaps that is where it came from. The benefits seem very very similar to Hertz #1 Gold--so I guess I'll give it a try to see if I at least can get an upgrade.

I have found that you need to request your upgrade. I usually say something like "Don't I get an upgrade based on my Select status?" when making the reservation. Otherwise it rarely happens.

I agree that they give out the status unsolicted but I have not been given anything but rock bottom minimum, ie: Tuesday a reservation for a four door standard thru their web site produced a Dodge Neon. I don't need or want a Caddy or Lincoln but the National Emerald Isle sure attracts most of my business and in airports where National does not have the Isle program I give the business to Hertz where their #1 Gold program is pretty good. Avis still needs to work on their program before they get more of my rentals.
