I called avis to book a car in Guam. Here is an excerpt of the conversation:

Me: I'd like a rate for a one day rental in Guam
he: Where?
Me: Guam
He: Can you spell that?
Me: G-U-A-M.
He: That's short for Guatamala?
Me: No, it's an island
He: Oh, I see it. It's in South Korea.
Me: No, it is a US territory in the Pacific.
He: I thought you said Guam.
Me: I did say Guam
He: What country is Guam in?
Me: The airport code is GUM
He: There is no A in it.
Me: I know, I gave you the iata airport code.
He: You gave me what?
Me: Thanks for your time.

I hung up and booked with Alamo. It was so funny, I couldn't even be mad at the guy The conversation took about 5 mins as he was hacking feverishly on his keyboard during this exchange.

I don't know what's funnier, the agent not knowing what Guam is or the concept of calling around to get rate quotes

If he didn't call, we wouldn't have been able to enjoy this thread.

The AVIS app on your phone works better at 80 mph

Ok, but the other blashpemy is why you didn't HUCA ("hang up, call again") to simply get another agent at Avis. Isn't it also safer to "redial" at 80 mph than to dial a different rental agency? (Or did you have both Avis and Alamo on voice dialing command already?)

And you really needed to make the reservation before your next stop???

Don't mean to revive an old thread,

But I just had a similar conversation.

I was trying to redeem my 3 free days on National for an upcoming trip to Guam.

But the computer was not letting me redeem my free days in Guam, so I call National.

Me: Hi I would like to book a car in Guam, and use my 3 free rental days.
Agent: Okay, Guam?
Me: Yes, G-U-A-M
Agent: Guam International Airport?
Me: Yes
*Agent collects my information as to my date of arrival/departure*
Agent: Sorry sir, it appears that your free reward days can only be used in the US and Canada and is not valid on international rentals
Me: um...but Guam is part of the US
*silence for about 15 seconds*
Agent: Sorry?
Me: Guam is an US island in the South Pacific
*silence for another 10 seconds*
Me: Hello?
Agent: Sorry, it appears that we cant over-ride the system, and the free day is not valid in Guam
Me:...Thank you, have a good day

Looks like I might just have to pay for my rentals.
I am ES status with National, and just Gold with Hertz and no Status with Avis.
But I'm staying at the Hyatt, which has Hertz and Avis in the lobby...and would be more convenient for me to rent from either Hertz or Avis because of that....any idea who would have better cars? And would either offer an upgrade? I am going to book a Midsize, but would like an upgrade to at least a full size...or possibly even pay a small amount for a bump up to a Premium SUV

Thanks

If you can find someone on this board that has rented from either AVIS or Hertz in the lobby of the Hyatt in Guam, I'll pay you $20..........

Hotel locations for any rental car agencies have terrible selections. Often having less than 10 cars on site. If you want selection, rent from an airport location. This applies to the Hyatt Guam, or any hotel.

thanks for the tips guess i'll modify my reservation to airport.
Which company would have the best car selection?

I would either prefer a large sedan or a full size suv like a suburban or tahoe

From this thread, I was wondering if a passport is needed to go to Guam and the answer appears to be no.

Well... that depends. If you're not from the U.S.A., then you probably need a passport to go to Guam...

(sorry, couldn't resist. I live in New Mexico, and once in a blue moon somebody asks me if I have my passport when I'm heading home...)

Guam is treated as "international" by a lot of businesses, Verizon Wireless to name one. Calling Guam and roaming in Guam is outrageously expensive. Plus the rental car agencies there are independently owned which may be why you couldn't redeem points.

I wouldn't count on a large rental vehicle as most rental cars on Guam are compacts. They consider Camrys full-size.

My name was not on the rental agreement, but I was with a colleague who rented from hertz at the Hyatt in Guam. Maybe you should only pay him 10.00
