avis e-toll convenience fee?

I rented an avis car to florida. I'm pretty sure (not 100% though) I paid all tolls in cash. However, avis charged me $1*3 toll fees + $10/week*2week convenience fees w/ an email saying I ran 3 tolls: OKEECHOBEE, BIRD ROAD NB ORT LITE, and HOMESTEAD NB.

Can I ask for proof from avis? If I really ran tolls, is it possible for avis to partially waive the convenience fees? Anybody could share some experience? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to FlyerTalk, neiku.

People have already shared information before. You can find a lot by using "Search This Forum" on the word "convenience". Here is one thread in particular you should look at:

I just called avis e-toll. They told me the 3 tolls I ran didn't have a cash lane. The csr said he would credit $15 back to me and only charged $2.5*2 convenience fees for the days I used.

I don't mind the e-toll fee, what I mind is them not having the toll device for all locations that have tolls. When you fly in somewhere new you may not realize you need to keep a lot of change for various tolls.

Interesting. I was really ticked the other day when my $.49 toll in Dallas, (my only toll of the trip) carried a $5.00 "convenience fee." Next call - Presidents desk.....

While it is considered by some a high fee for using the service, it's our job to be aware of the prices of services we use. Avis has long established the prices of the etolls in different locations at www.avis.com/etoll.

Driving through Illinois and up to Northern Wisconsin I was more than happy to pay the "convenience fee" in order to avoid having to roll down my window when it was 3 degrees outside.

...and the Illinois Tollway doubles the toll if you pay with cash. I don't like the "convenience fee" and avoid it by brining my transponder when I'm in EZ-Pass states but at double-toll rates, you might actually offset the fee.

When you use the car rental company's transponder, you are charged the non-discounted cash toll, plus the convenience fee.

I ran into this issue where Avis hit me with an e-toll charge for a week in Orlando last year. I know I paid all the tolls in cash, but I suspected one of the combo e-pass/cash lanes picked up the transponder before I threw my coins in the bin.
I complained and eventually got the money refunded from avis.

I noticed on a rental in FL this past weekend, the transponder mounted under the rearview had a on-off switch. So maybe they are going to this system to give people the option to not get tricked into using e-toll.

Going to??? I seem to remember that switch from the last time I rented in Florida (MCO), and I haven't been to Florida for several years now!

...and if you rent a car for 3wks, drive on a toll road the first day but not after that, you'll still have to pay the fee for everyday you had the car out!

Depends also on the country. Here in parts of Australia you must use the Avis etoll service, you are not allowed to use your own tag and in most stations can't pay cash anymore.

Is there any sort of national transponder service? I usually take my GPS with me on trips so taking a transponder would be easy.

From what I can tell and find online most states run their own system not tied to anyone else..
