i can virtually guarantee that nobody at avis spent time setting this up, and probably doesn't even know it exists... a prior renter stuck in traffic screwing around...

We've had an extended discussion over on the National Forum about MyKey:

Sometimes? I'm trying to remember that last time I didn't have a pocket bulging set of 2-3 keys plus keyless fob!

Wow, don't drive in New England, you'll be run off the road for holding up traffic. Normal rush hour speed is 85.

For the GM cars, the Camaro has a setting where you can have it beep/blink when you hit certain speeds. It's annoying because the speed limit always changes but to change the speed warning, it's buried deep in the options. The CTS also flashes on the dash that the "Max speed is 125 MPH" but doesn't cut you off from going faster...
Camaro (V6) is speed limited to 118 MPH ...

You don't need a HP car .... Camaro LT (V6) will comfortably cruise at 90!

So will a base Hyundai Sonata.

And I've found that the Chevy Cobalt can too... sometimes.

I think this requires at least one (if not multiple) of the following:
1. Downhill
2. Wind at your back
3. Limited weight in the car (no luggage, small driver, gas tank < 1/4, etc)
4. Being pushed by anything

It can go about 129mph when it reaches terminal velocity after sending it over a very high cliff or pushing out of an airplane.

For the record, I think terminal velocity for a Cobalt would be a lot more than 129mph!

It is a Cobalt. I'm sure it would find a way to slow itself down on the way.

It's not the end of the world, I hand it back today.

(Just for future reference, is there a safe/legal way to disable it?)
The solution lies with the MyFordTouch system. There are normally 2 keys on the keychain, and one of them is programmed to limit the speed of the veihcle to 80mph. The other key is not limited. It is part of the parental control system of MyFordTouch. Try the other key the next time.

Is there a way to figure out which key is which before you get up to 80 mph? (I don't know about you, buit for me it's kinda hard to change keys while you're dirving on the freeway!)

Just had the same issue with a Ford Focus I rented at IAD. It was limited to 80mph. Though this was probably for the greater good. I have a habit of getting pulled over/tickets for speeding in rental cars for some reason.
