Could someone help validate this scenario for me? I have 0 miles in my LM account now. Let's say I book a domestic one-way award for 12,500 miles.

By using the maximum cash option I get :

Cash Paid = $92

Miles needed = 5,500 (let's say 6,000 since LM only allows you to purchase 1k increments)

Cash paid for miles = 6x$30 = 180

Booking fee = $25

Total cash = $297

So if I cancelled this booking, I would receive 13,000 miles in my account? Is this correct?

Thanks choupeo! Yes I forgot the $50. I took the plunge and reserved a biz class award for 25k. Ticket was issued immediately. Called and followed the OP's step by step instructions to cancel. Everything went fine and I received my $50 debit memo email too! Now waiting for the miles to post.

Key to saving money is to cancel Immediately and BEFORE ticket is issued.

In order to delay ticketing by a few hours. You should use partners preferably in far away places. LM is aware of this practice, so you should be careful not to over-do it. TA/AV tickets issue in seconds.

I'd recommend Asiana. Anything I've ticketed with SQ has been pretty much instant.

I've booked a trip with SQ+OZ and the ticketing took about 5 minutes. Not exactly instant, but not quite enough to get an agent to cancel the booking.

Guess it's too dicey and unpredictable. I'll wait for the 2 for 1 promo.

Thanks for the update. I am now tempting to try the same, still kicking myself for not taking advantage of the share miles promo last month

I called the Avianca US number to cancel on Friday.

Compared to my one previous call with TACA it was a revelation! Very efficiently handled. Miles back in my account 24 hours later. Taxes to follow in 2-3 months apparently.

i have tried it last week twice.

First time i took about an hour for me. But in the end it failed by the credit card number input and the cc agent says the system had a problem.
But i think it was just a stuoid excuse.

I will be in LIM in May , so i just walk in to the TACA Office at the airport and try to cancel my ticket for a june flight.

This is not correct.. The price of 1k miles declines with each 1k you purchased.. As a I recall, it used to average out to $15/1k miles.. I don't know if this has changed from before..
