Shanghai Hotels
I'll be in Shanhai in September and would like to stay in a downtown hotel. I was thinking of either the Ramada Plaza or Sofitel Hyland, which are about the same price, or maybe the Peace Hotel, which is a little higher. Any recommendations on these?

if you haven't already, check out the shanghai thread for insights:

the "soft" hotel used to be hot during the mid 90s, but it's time has clearly passed. i don't like the ramada. the peace is cool if you're into old hotels with lots of history.
i suggest you check out the (underrated) westin and some of the better chinese hotels like the hengshan. a lot depends on whether you want to be out by the bund (peace and westin) or in the thick of the action (french concession).

Thanks Moondog. I was wondering why you don't like the Ramada Plaza. Frommers says it's very plush, most lavish lobby in Shanghai, and a good value - not so?
Also, does the JW Marriott look like it's about to open? I can get a discount there (a friend works for Marriott), but I've called them twice and they will only say that they will open in late September - no specific date.

The JW Marriott looks like a good bet.
Also you might want to check out some of the hotels near the Shaanxi road subway station (Jinjiang, Okura Garden, Ruijin, etc)
