Has anyone gone to a day spa in Buenos Aires? Any recommendations? We're staying at the Hilton, if it matters. Thanks!!

Good to know... I have found that in some strong dollar markets that is acceptable and frowned upon in others.

Yes, this is true. Banks will routinely refuse to exchange any US notes that are torn or have any pieces missing (no matter how small), or defaced notes. If I need to take US currency to Argentina, I go to my bank and specifically get notes in very good condition (or new if that is possible).

But easier still just use your debit card to get pesos at one of the very large number of networked ATMs around BsAs.

If you exchange money at a bank you will need your passport (and check what times the bank will do foreign exchange transactions).

This might have been acceptable during the peso crisis, but don't expect taxis drivers to accept dollar bills these days. I try and have the exact amount for payment, since it's difficult for foreigners to easily recognize fake coins which will often be given to them in change. Generally you round up to the nearest 25 or 50 centavos (depending on the fare).

Generally no such issue for me. Torn bills or heavily-soiled ones are generally a bad idea, but wrinkled bills have never caused me heart ache in Buenos Aires.

About giving USD to taxi drivers, many definitely don't like it in Buenos Aires -- especially nowadays.

Back to the hotel procing question... I REALLY advise to call the actual hotel, not the 800 US number and try to talk to and negociate with a manager. Mention that new, long-term business is a possibility with you, family and business associates and you can neg. a great rate at most places. There is a lot of competiton in BA and occupancies are not high.

Shopping, Spas and Food

Hi,

First off, what a great thread! My boyfriend and I will be visiting BA for 2 weeks in early Sept. I'd like some recommendations on where to shop. I'm looking for hip clothes (not necessarily a leather jacket though). Also, does anyone have any idea if high end stores, i.e. Fendi are cheaper in BA than in the states? I'm also interested in shopping for antiques, but would like to know if shipping will be too expensive.

Any spas that are recommended? I'm interested in getting a massage after my long flight?

And finally, what are some good restaurants for French food?

A couple places for hip clothing.. The shopping mall Alto Palermo (corner of Santa Fe & Coronel Diaz) has lots of variety and great deals in comparison to back home. Another is to walk along Santa Fe, between Coronel Diaz and Cordoba (towards downtown - the Obelisco).
For jeans I highly reccomend Kosiuko jeans. very trendy very popular and very comfortable, though dont' forget to check out the other stores first and ALWAYS ask for your TAX FREE coupon when paying for clothing (non-food and lodging items). You'll know they offer it because there is a sticker at the entrance.

For Antiques, there is a small gem of a place on Aguerro around the numbering of 2300 - 2500 (two small block radius). This street is no more than 10 minute walk from the Village Recoleta. Though you can always try going into the older part of town where there are many shops. Most of these stores have exported their antiques many times, so it would be a matter of asking them to find out the cost.

You'll have lots of fun in BA.. I don't konw about French food, but there are many great steak restaurants that you should not miss on (along with their great wine!!)

wine.

Thanks for the above advice. Does anyone know how prices of antiques compare to the US? And if there are any particular bargains to be had?

Also, I'm interested in picking up a couple of bottles of Argentinian wine. I've already tried several varieties of Malbec and Torrontos (sp?). I also love champagne, with my favorite being V. Cliquot. Any Argentinian brands compare?

For French fare, I suggest:

- Nectarine
- L'Atelier

Please refer to the Buenos Aires F&B Thread plus other information that has been posted in this thread for more details.

Argentina is producing a variety of very good sparkling wines, with excellent price/quality ratios. I suggest you look for:

- Chandon Eternum
- Luigi Bosca Boheme
- Baron B Unique
- Rosell Boher
