Relax. I understand what you said, as well as what Kirker said. You are telling me the fact, that the hotel is not really at the Puerto (by the sea) pe se, and voice your preference of the choices that have more "characters".

OTOH, Kirker wants to let me know the "centro" is not all bad - depends on personal taste - at least that area seems to be a modern and clean area though totally lack of "character". His use of Canary Wharf in London is very helpful for me to visualize the area. I dont read it as Kirker says anything about that you are wrong - all he tries to do is to point out that some people may actually prefer "centro", for its modern feel and largely free of both noise and air pollution.

I am sorry that I cause the confusion you have. We have options, the most basic one comes down to, would we prefer to pay, so we can get a more convenient, and more "charming" location, or we prefer not to pay (0 cost), so we will get a less convenient, less "charming", but still acceptable location?
I think Kirker's post largely gives us better information to enable us weigh our options. Remember, "charming" is a very personal thing. :-) Like I said, free of diesel fume and exhaust, is a big draw to us. Convience is also a factor not to be ignored.

Happy: you are telling me to relax however by KIRKER attaching my name to your post and describing CENTRO as you put it you got the wrong information... THat is what I am trying to correct but neither you or Kirker are listening. You say being free of diesel etc is a draw for you.. Then dont go to HI express. Unless you want to dodge traffic taking the "15 minute walk" to Puerto Madero.

Your understanding of CENTRO from his post is wrong. Centro is not like Canary Wharf nor is it free of busses and noise with silver skyscrapers. THAT is a description of Puerto Madero.

The best comparasion of CENTRO is downtown Brooklyn or chicago with narrow dirty streets busses, fumes and other crap. So if that is what you want have a great time. Now I will lay off the coffee and relax.

You have not given me any description of Centro up until this post, so what do I have to go by? The reviews on Tripadvisors are average to above average - just about what it might deserve - nothing charming or fancy, but may be practical.

Dont forget, we also have the option to stay at Intercontinental, abeit would cost twice as many points, but is still FREE. I haven't yet checked out the location of IC, nor decide how many days we would want to spend in EZE. BTW, IC has terrible reviews on Tripadvisor, for twice as many pts as HIX...another hmmm...

The relaxation to us, is our 16 day cruise r/t EZE all the way to Ushuaia, Punta Arena, Antarctica, then back. No question in my mind we will definitely have a great time on the ship, especially if we do our land part of EZE before the cruise. :-)

I've heard from friends that have travelled to EZE before that Buenos Aires is a great city to get suits, shirts, ties and other menswear items. I was wondering
A) if this is true
B) What some good shops to visit would be?

I'm not looking for anything custom, just some decent clothes at a reasonable price.

Thanks to all posting in this thread....has been most helpful to us. We are doing 10 days (9 nights) in August as follows (recognizing limitations of not visiting Salta, Iguazu falls, etc.):

3 nights at BA Hilton on points

take train to Tigre

take ferry to Carmelo

take bus to Colonia

take ferry back to BA

(4 nights unaccounted for, we will make this loop fast and head back to BA
early if above towns are too dull)

2 last nights at BA HIX on points

Welcome any comments, including places worth visiting as "short trips" from Tigre/Carmelo/Colonia or between...don't want to do Montevideo this time around, most likely)

Yes, Buenos Aires is currently a great option for you to get nice mens clothing at reasonable prices. Your best bet is to head to the outlet stores of Christian Dior and similar. I will dig up the addresses for you and post them later.

Please note, the above addresses seem to be current as this post is written, but locations do change from time to time. Of the three designers posted above, Christian Lacroix will probably have the least formal wear (designs will be more modern). For banking/law firm type clothes, its probably not your best choice, although its still worth shopping around.

These outlet stores will usually carry geat from the previos 2-3 seasons and also have some overstock items of the current collections.

there are also a bunch of clothing stores on Cordoba somewhere around the 3400- 4400 blocks. There is a bus line (ican't remember the number, but i am sure someone will know it) and you can just ride it till you see the outlets.

Many outlet stores are now moving to streets off Cordoba. They are now on some of the cross streets but still well in the vicinity of the mentioned area.

Is there luggage storage at EZE or AEP? I plan to fly to FTE on arrival in EZE (will need to transfer airports) and would like to only take my backpack to Patagonia. I'll have some nicer clothes with me for the days I'll be in BsAs and would rather store a second suitcase than take it with me.

Yes, the service is offered at both airports last time I checked (which was a while back). I dont think the services have been de-activated because of any security related issues. Let me check the websites and get back to you.

Mrs. alien and I will be in Buenos Aires for six days mid November, and again six days mid January. These will be our first trips there. Our foremost consideration is what area/district to stay.
To give you an idea of what we are looking for, in Paris we are at our happiest staying on the Left Bank, 5th, in a smaller hotel @ $150/night. We will spend most days getting on The Metro, getting off at a some distant point, and by compass to give us a general direction, spend 3 or 4 hours wandering in the general direction back to our hotel. Rather than fine dining, we spend the money on finer wines and some bread, fruit, and cheeses shopped for along the local's Rue Mouffetard. As sacreligious as it may be, we are not museum people. We are a reasonably well-traveled early 50's going on 40's couple that spend most of our time walking, biking, and in general trying to achieve fate's almost-lost experiences (I have either had too much or not enough coffee this morning ).
Can we narrow the districts down to a couple to choose from?

Edited to add: What with the wine and beef there, and the still reasonable prices, I anticipate that we will be dining out far more than we normally would...medium price ranged local?

Hi Alien, I suggest looking into smaller full service B&Bs like Bobo Hotel, 5 Cool Rooms, and Hotel Finisterra. Those should be good options for you to start your research.

If you have hotel points to burn, EZE is usually a decent destination to use those, plenty of SPG properties in town and there is also the Hilton Puerto Madero, the Hyatt and the Marriott Plaza (although these last ones are more expensive points-wise).
