Rescue Train

Anybody on 148 right now? We're stopped just north of Trenton waiting for an NJT "Rescue Train". Perhaps we can convince them to open the cafe?

Hehe--this is great! I've never thought of FT as a live connecting place. It'd be hilarious if five or six other FTers were on your train and saw your note and you all met up!

Actually, if we ever do get decent Internet service on planes, it'd be hilarious if we saw threads for people saying "I'm on UA 2092 in seat 29F--anyone else on this flight?" and we saw five or six responses...

Wonder what the "rescue train" is. Probably just a helper engine (or, another train that can attach on to this one) to "rescue" another train with a dead locomotive (that's the industry term for this situation).

All is well, we were "rescued" by an NJT train. 2 1/2 hours late into NYP. Nothing like recommending AMTRAK to your friends then leaning out a stopped train and seeing the locomotive steaming like 3 mile island.

Why do you think they are called toasters?

Actually, I am curious what kind of loco it was. An AEM7 or an HHP?

It was an AEM-7, nickname toaster, that roasted. Story with pictures of the burning motor can be found here.

What I don't understand is why they didn't uncouple the second motor from the first and just allow the train to continue without the burning motor. That IMHO would have been both easier and safer than making everyone transfer to a NJT train via bridge plates.

I believe that the new Virgin America Airbuses have a chat feature in the seat back entertainment unit that lets passengers IM with each other.
