I got used to paying 20% less, so now it feels like they just raised the fare. Which makes me think about how much Amtrak sucks. Whenever I talk to customer service, their explanation for everything is "well thats how it works on a plane." But Amtrak is not in the air travel business. If that is their corporate culture, no wonder no one rides the train anymore.
They do indeed need some customer service improvement. There are loads of 10% discounts out there, by the way. Not sure about other 20% codes.

What was the context when AMTRAK said: "that's how it works on a plane"? That is weird, as AMTRAK has all sorts of different rules versus the airlines (and IMHO, AMTRAK is much easier-going than the airlines).

Train passenger loads are at record high numbers (in the AMTRAK era).

bhatnasx does mention that V626 is for RI travel only on the first post of this thread. Allowing use of it across the board for online purchases was a loophole that Amtrak has plugged . . . and it was good while it lasted! Can't criticize Amtrak on this one (except for bring dumb enough to allow the loophole in the first place).

V626 seems to work still at the station ticket kiosk...

Tried the V626 code online a couple of days ago, no cigar (as others have found).

Gave up and went to the station to get a ticket at the full price. Surprisingly, it was found that V626 DOES work when buying a ticket at the Quik-Trak machine. This was in NY Penn station for a ticket to Boston.

I guess the station Quik-Trak machines havn't caught on to the website update yet....

Hope this helps -

ZB

PS: V166 also seems to work and give 10% off for the BOS-NYC-NJ sector.

That's great news.

For those who want to buy tickets without going to a station, I'm still having luck on the phone. Tell JULIE you want to speak with an agent (say "agent"), and tell the agent that JULIE misrecognized your promo code (this did actually happen to me once). The agent should be able to book V626 for you without problems. If you complain that the code isn't working online, he or she is more likely to look up the details and tell you that it's Rhode Island only.

And, of course, if at first you don't succeed...

The latest "Arrive" magazine has some new codes for companion fares:
V749 for 50% off full price companion fare to/from Philly
V547 for 50% off full price companion fare to/from NYC
These two should be good through 12/15/2005

V642 for 50% off full price companion fare to/from Boston
This one is only good for travel through 9/30/2005

Remember to purchase at least three days in advance.

Weekly Specials

I've been watching the weekly Specials for train 5 & 6. (California Zephyr) This train is not showing. (I've bought tickets before 70% off)

Anyone know how Amtrak decides which route will be on sale and when? Traveling end of July, Grand Junction to Omaha. Trying to decide if I should just buy now, or wait it out.

I would NOT wait any longer to buy for the CZ. It very well may sell out at this point. The sale fares are generally on "lighter" traveled lines and right now, the are selling for August and September. Enjoy your trip! Cheers!

This promotion appears to be targetted to selected inactive AGR members by e-mail.
