No Discounts During Holidays

Hi jalsaffar and welcome to FT!

As AlanB stated in the post before yours, Amtrak imposes blackout dates during most holiday periods, including the current period. All Amtrak discount codes, other than those you mentioned, are blacked out between 17 December and 2 January. I am sorry that I can not be of more assistance, but this is the long running story with Amtrak.

Perhaps, someone else will post differently and surprise you (and me for that matter), but I wouldn't hold out for it.

Cheers.

I was wondering whether anyone knew of any discount codes for NY-Boston trains (preferably stackable with AAA) that will be valid for the next few months. No specific date, as I'll be traveling between NY and Boston a lot, and would like to be able to occasionally treat myself to train instead of bus torture.
I checked the first page and the last few and haven't seen any that haven't expired - sorry if I missed it!

Thanks!

ask for help

I plan to go to Charlottesville at Jan. 4th from New York. Usually the Jan.4th is out of peak time, so I guess it should have some discount for this. Could someone help me about it? Really appreciate so much for your helpful hand!

The NARP card also works during the Christmas and New Year period: 10% off. Also, the membership dues goes to a good cause.

Thank you for your help! :)

Your trip is way too far into the future to find codes now. Amtrak typically will release codes that are valid for 3 months in advance, maximum 6 months. So you're out of that window.

Additionally Amtrak doesn't often allow for discount codes during the month of August, one of its peak months and especially on the Auto Train which usually sells out without needing to discount things.

Now all of that said, let me also tell you that Amtrak uses a demmand pricing system. As each day's train fills up, ticket prices rise. This is true for both coach seating and sleepers. At the present time, my guess is that very few people have booked that far in advance.

So if your travel dates are firm, the odds are that you'll save more money by booking right now without a discount code, than you'll ever save with a code 4 or 5 months from now. Especially if you plan to book a sleeper, since the discount codes only work on the basic railfare and not the price of the sleeper.

As an example of this, I priced a trip in March. Heading south on the 20th I was quoted a seat price of $77, a roomette price of $219, and a bedroom price of $333. For the return date that I picked, the 24th, the train apparently has already sold more seats as the prices jumped considerably. Seat $187, roomette $264, bedroom $615.

I then went and plugged in a south bound date of August 27th just for the heck of it, coach seats are $187. However the sleepers are very cheap right now at $125 for a roomette and $272 for a bedroom.

So especially if you plan to travel in a sleeper, I would recommend forgetting about a discount code and book your trip right now. A discount code will never save you more than 20-25% off of the $187 amount and it will do nothing for the sleeper charges. Plus by the time that codes come out for that time period, if they ever do, I'm betting that the $187 coach seat price will have gone up.

One final note, if your travel dates are flexible at this point, then price leaving and returning on several different days within your travel window. Prices can vary heavily from one day to the next and you could save a bundle.

Thank you

Thank you for your post - very informative.

Since I don't have a return date yet, then would it make sense to book the 1st half of the trip ($51.00 per seat 1 way) or does this create some problem with the return booking?

Thanks

Booking the first leg will certainly not create a problem with booking your return trip. Just be sure that you are positve on that date. Amtrak does not charge a service charge to change a reservation, but you will pay the difference between your original fare and whatever fares are in effect at that time. If you however need to cancel and want a refund, you will pay a small penalty.

I will mention that sometimes, although I've never seen this happen on the Autotrain, a roundtrip booked in one reservation will cost a little less than two seperate one way reservations.

Ps. 51 bucks a seat is a great rate, so if you are positive about your travel, book it ASAP. Just don't forget that you also have to pay for the car/van too.

I got caught. I initiated a move just before the increase and now don't have enough for travel this weekend.

Same thing just happened to me. I've got 6K in my AGR account & was going to use the points for travel to PHL next Thurs & return on Sat. I guess I'll use points for one way on Thurs & pay for the return on Sat.

Alan - Thanks for your help - Since there are 6 of us and the price was really good, we booked our seats.

Thanks again for your help
