Post Amtrak Codes Here!
Interested in taking over this thread? Then please see post #315. Thanks! :)
Updated on June 15, 2005 - sorry, it had been a while! Hello All, I just wanted to say that at Flyertalk, we welcome anyone interested in travel. The purpose of this thread isn't necessarily a "Can you help me find a cheaper fare from X-Y?" but a place to share information on available discounts. Before asking for help, please try to help yourselves. If available, the terms & conditions of each code is posted below. If your travel meets these terms & conditions, then try test-selling - choose the fare you're most comfortable with. We welcome the new folks here readily, but I would like to request that if you're looking for a specific fare, that you realize that the majority of us are not travel agents and that although we're willing to help you out, it's always appreciated if you try to help yourself first - then maybe we can help you out a little more. Thanks! ***Please post on this thread if a code is old & doesn't work anymore OR if you've found a new one that does work & I will try to keep it updated.*** Tips from Amtrak - Tips for Using Promo Codes (thanks dberry!) Veteran's Advantage - 15% off Unlike Student Advantage, I'm guessing you really do have to be a veteran for this one - http://www.veteransadvantage.com/par...amtrak-50.html Information on the NARP discount - http://www.narprail.org/dis.htm *** I always test sell all the codes as sometimes codes are valid on a route that we don't think they are valid on, so it doesn't hurt to try. It usually only takes about an extra 10 minutes. When doing test sells, I recommend trying to do it off of the AAA rate first - if that doesn't work, try doing it off the regular rate. Check the last few pages for current codes - I’ll try to keep this updated regarding current Amtrak promos & codes – if I slack off on it, I apologize in advance Hope this helps people out! |

Way to be more descriptive! Thanks for going through all that - I'm sure this will be a great resource.
FYI - for the "Coupon Required" ones, such as the Ent. Book 10% off, you don't really have to present your coupon if you are ticketing at a major station that has electronic ticketing. At WAS, you can reserve it online or even over the telephone & go to the self-ticket machines & swipe your credit card & the ticket pops out. |
Outstanding! Bhatnasx and MKincaid - thank you for the great resource.

No big deal, it appears it is reservable with a phone agent though not with "Julie". Not combinable with Student Advantage or AAA, by the way. If anyone else runs across other codes, please post them here as well. |
From the "Take it Easy, Take Amtrak: Amtrak & the National Park Service present Trails & Rails" brochure:
"To receive a 5% discount off the lowest available Amtrak fare present a valid National Park Pass and photo ID at time of ticketing. Offer valid on select trains only. This discount is valid for a family up to four. Offer not combinable with other offers, promotions, or discount." No other details provided: - No discount code number given. - Excluded trains are not specified. Best to just show Amtrak this brochure to an Amtrak agent since without a code it may be difficult to prove that this fare exists. |
Doh!! I just paid for Student Advantage membership a week ago. Will definetly remember this one for the future.
<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by mkincaid: Lastly, if you're a student, go to http://studentadvantage.com/enrollment and enter any Amtrak ticket number as the promotion code: voila, free card - and 20% off - for a year. After the year, you can always do it again; this loophole has worked at least twice in a row now. (Don't have Amtrak ticket stock handy? If you have an AGR account log into http://amtrakguestrewards.com ; posted travel transactions will show a ticket number: copy and paste.) </font> |
Double doh! All I have a Student Advantage card for is the 15% Amtrak discount! I just renewed at the beginning of July, too. I've got approximately 200 hundred ticket stubs in stacks on my desk. Anyone need a ticket number? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by travelmad478: Using my fellow FTers' excellent work on ferreting out promotion codes, I just went online to book a ticket. I picked my train, input the promotion code, was given the discounted fare, and hit "Book Selection." The next screen informed me that my credit card had been charged...for the full fare! Hey, what happened to my discount? I hopped on the phone ("Agent!!") and got this straightened out so that I now have the discounted price, but no one could explain why the website originally priced the promotion correctly and then charged me a higher fare when I bought the ticket. Keep this in mind when you're booking...you may need to work a little harder than you thought.</font> |
Thanks--that was me. By the way, I just made the return trip today and tried the same online purchase (using code V707) again in the other direction. This time, it worked fine. Go figure.

This may be a California only promotion....Pick up a coupon from any Sizzler (call first, the one I went to only had two left) for buy one get one free Adult, Senior or Student fare on the following routes:
-Coast Starlight -Empire Builder -California Zephyr -Southwest Chief -Sunset Limited -Texas Eagle Discount Code H333 You can't book it on-line & must present coupon at station to ticket (you can hold a reservation 24 hours via phone). Purchse thru 11/20/03 travel between 07/08/03 and 11/20/03. Since they only had two left where I went I don't have any extras http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif. If I can find another Sizzler near-by, I'll try to get a few to offer to fellow FT'rs. This is a bit of work to take advantage of, but a great deal. |
On H215, I got nixed by the ticket guy at Alexandria. He wanted the actual cert before I could get the discount. He collected the cert from me as well.
As to online booking, the H215 states that it cannot be used over the internet - it must be done on the phone or with an agent. |

So, I priced a ticket on Regional from NYP to BWI, using the promo code V529 with Business Class accommodation added. Is this valid? The Amtrak website did process the discount, with the separate Business seat cost added on top. The promo code website states that the discount is only valid in coach travel on Regional. Will this be a problem when I check in, i.e. will they not honor the discount/business seating?
|
i have no idea. i would recommend that you use the electronic ticketing as opposed to a gate agent though - you just swipe your credit card and it'll pop out your ticket - the less people you have to talk to, the better - once the ticket guys on board see your ticket, they don't care about your fare, they just want to make sure you're in the right section of the train. if it processed online, i doubt they have the controls in place to stop it from working. let us know what happens...

Will this be a problem when I check in, i.e. will they not honor the discount/business seating?</font> H317 is an example of a code that can't be used for business class travel. In this case after you add the business class seat you will get "The promotional fare you requested applies to a service you have not booked, so we have provided a non-promotional fare. You may proceed with this fare or consult your promotional materials and use your back button to select a valid service." V529, V707, and V709 all seem to have no problem being combined with a business class seat. If the website allowed you to book it, it's legal for the particular code you used. Don't worry about it. Would it be helpful if I created a table listing the various conditions and requirements of each code (which might be more clear than wading through the fine print of each code)? Thanks to mckincaid for making that happen! [This message has been edited by bhatnasx (edited 08-25-2003).] |
FYI - test booking your trip as two one-way tickets. I just ended up booking this way. I don't remember the exact numbers, but it was about $20 cheaper this way than booking as a roundtrip ticket! (you can also test using all the available promo codes)

Perfect for weekend getaways with family and friends. Offer valid June 1 - Sept. 30, 2003. Advance reservations required. Offer valid for round-trip, in-bound Portland travel only. Some restrictions apply. Blackout dates apply. Amtrak Cascades provides service between Eugene, Ore., and Vancouver, British Columbia. ____ Naturally, I see this offer after I've paid for my 2 biz class tickets. Also note that there is some uncertainty as to whether the Talgo trainsets are even running, as there are conflicting reports that they are being pulled from service (unexpectedly) due to servicing and maintenance issues. |

because you bought biz class, they may be refundable - amtrak's got a pretty lenient refund policy if you do it before you take the trip (at least they do on the NE corridor) - you may be able to save some money if you cancel & rebook - but it depends on how much effort you're willing to make, i guess... |

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Originally posted by Reindeerflame: For much of the fall, Amtrak is now offering a 5% discount for booking on its website, with the added twist that the discount can be used on top of other discounts that the traveler may use (such as the 15% senior discount or the 10% AAA/NARP discount). There are some holiday blackout dates. As usual, the discount only applies to the basic coach fare ("transportation") and does not apply to sleeper or business class "accomodation" charges.</font> |

Hey all... Sorry for the delay (been busy), but for an initial version of the promo codes list, see http://homepage.mac.com/mkincaid/amtk.html . The only new code that hasn't yet been mentioned yet on this thread is V729 (and perhaps a Kids Ride Free for the Capitol Corridor). But the table consolidates them all and shows all of the known conditions and requirements. Hope it is helpful.

Updated with V143 - thanks much, nyventurecapital! Also, appears H317 (second passenger rides 50% off) and H258 (Capitol Corridor weekends kids free) have been extended. Interesting note about V143: though they say it is only valid to/from NYP, it appears to work with any NEC station pair I try it on. As always YMMV.

i'm trying to go from omaha to denver round trip from about the 19th til the 4th (semi-flexible dates)
it's lookin pretty steep, but i really don't wanna drive it again (done it twice in the last 2 months already!) anyone out there have any old ticket stubs/numbers??? |
<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">anyone out there have any old ticket stubs/numbers???[/B]</font> I forgot to say it earlier, but Welcome to Flyertalk. As a new person, people may be a little less willing to help you out by giving you old ticket numbers (especially since you have not provided an e-mail address or even where you are from). I don't have a ticket number that I can give you, but I can tell you (and anyone else out there that's reading this post, because I'm sure there are quite a few that are lurking and not posting) that the Amtrak Tickets have 13 digits. The Student Advantage & Amtrak reservations systems are not linked. The Student Advantage system requires that 13 numbers be entered in the field. I recommend trying a random combinaton of 13 digits and seeing if it works. When I went to the Student Advantage Enrollment Page and attempted to use a random sequence of 13 digits, it worked just fine sevral times. Again, Welcome to Flyertalk & you're welcome. |
thanks alot for the advice! i'll definitely try that out!
and yes, i can totally understand what you mean about people being skeptical of newbies like me... i guess that's what you get when you lurk for a long time, but never post!! anyways, thanks again! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
finally! i was starting to get a little worried there... i put in about 20 different # combos and couldn't get it to work! seems the ticket numbers start with 1 i guess!
thanks again!!! |
I think the majority start with a 0 or a 1, for anyone else that tries.
