I'd just let 'em expire. 1800+ points is hardly worth fretting over; consider the equivalent value of the same quantity of airline miles. It isn't much.
If you have a friend or family member who rides Amtrak on one of the 1,000-point (each way) corridors, such as LA-San Diego, Boston-Portland, or Chicago-various, you could redeem a one-way award for him/her before your points expire.

5,600 points about to expire
I actually bought about 10,000 points when they were offering a 25% bonus for purchases and was using them on SEA-PDX at just 1,000 each way since the points were easy to redeem last minute and it locked in my price at the cheapest fare typically offered.
I don't live there any longer and don't have any specific need for these in the short run. Is there a way to keep them from expiring or should I just give them to friends and family?
Thanks!

If your location is correct--PDX/SEA--then you have some pretty good options. A single ride on Amtrak, no matter how short, will reset the expiration clock. (It'll also earn you another 100 points per segment.)
A run from Portland to Oregon City can be had for a bargain $4; Vancouver is $7 but has a lot more trains (and timing options for the return trip, if you don't have someone who will come pick you up). On the northern end, you can do a run from downtown Seattle to Tukwila for $8 or head north to Edmonds for $8.50.
