I've only seen popups in my Amazon account to promote my business, and things like this: https://www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/shop-small/promote?extlink=SBS2017_SBO_PaidSearch_Bing

No insight if anything will be offered with AmEx cardholders to promote purchases that day.

last year was an extra point on mr cards and spg. Maybe it was 2 extra points on Hilton or Delta?

But yeah, i liked the straight discount right off the top instead. i suppose if you had a big, small business purchase though, last year's structure would be far more appealing.

True. Last year Plastiq was coding as a small business, so at 2x points, big purchases (>$5000) on Amex Business Platinum (1.5x) made the 2.5% vig on Plastiq not an impediment for doing credit card payment at profit to contractors etc. who wouldn't normally take a credit card.

Wow, I'm astonished that they don't do much in the US for this. In Australia, Shop Small Month is $10 statement credits for $20+ purchases for the whole month (with a cap, naturally - it is free money after all).

Honestly though, I feel like I'd benefit more from extra MR points - 4 points at supermarkets!

They did. The promotion originated in 2010 and has evolved:

Register USA AMEX to earn $25 credit for Small Business purchases 11.27-12.31.10

American Express Small Business Saturday Will Return 11/26/11

American Express Small Business Saturday Will Return 11/24/12

Small Business Saturday [USA] - November 30, 2013

AmEx [USA] Small Biz Saturday 2014: Nov 29, $10 per transaction, $30 per card.

2015 Small Business Saturday (USA): TARGETED

Shop Small: Extra Point or Percent on most USA Amex Cards at Small Biz to 12.31.2016

And it has been discovered by mid-Oct in all those previous years, except in 2010 (the first year) it wasn't discovered until Nov 8 (which it happens to be today).

And I just checked Dan's Deals (where apparently it was first discovered in many previous years), and still nothing there either.

Does Amex have any history of making "complex" offers?

Ie, I think they could make an offer like "make a minimum purchase of $X at N different Small Business Map merchants during XX/XX/2017-YY/YY/2017, and earn <whatever>".

But are they set up to do a promo that requires using a certain number of different merchants? I've seen such promos from other companies (get a bonus for each separate partner once, or whatever), but I don't recall seeing any like this from Amex.

They may have nothing to gain from a simple offer, because a simple offer is too easy to "trick out" (just using one merchant, for example) which doesn't accomplish the goal of learning about more small business merchants.

good point

but double points doesnt really cost them much if anything does it?
especially when vast majority redeem at 1 cent or less per point..

So how is small business Saturday useful...?

I see AMEX is doing their usual stunt of offering less and less in terms of card member perks as each year passes. Can't wait for Chenault to leave.
