FHR properties in Las Vegas are discussed HERE
FHR is the American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts benefit program available with Centurion and Platinum charge cards.
Receive these complimentary benefits with each FINE HOTELS & RESORTS booking:
USA cardholder may book online at: americanexpress.com/fhr or call Platinum Travel Service at 1-800-525-3355. Cardholders from other countries can use the same website to see participating properties, but cannot view prices or book. In some countries FHR properties can be booked through the general American Express Travel site.
Per the T's and C's of FHR, you must pay with an American Express card when checking out of the hotel. However many front desk agents don't notice or care so it is possible, but not a guarantee, that you can pay with a non-Amex card.

Historically FHR stays earn loyalty points since it's PTS is a traditional travel agents. However, the unknown here is what happens with prepaid 5x stays. That's still unclear. Seems like you won't get Marriott points if you book prepaid FHR stays.

I received Marriott points for a prepaid FHR stay at the Nines hotel in Portland this past Monday.

Upgrade: Booked basic room and was upgraded to the equivalent of a spacious junior suite for a one night stay. No complaints about the room although it didn't have a separate shower.
Early check-in: Arrived 12pm, room was ready.
Breakfast credit: Daily breakfast, including buffet, in the restaurant for two. No hot food at the buffet but included were a la carte items like eggs and pancakes.
Amenity: £75 spa credit. We were also granted unlimited access to the onsite thermal spas for both days (standard hotel access is 2 hours early morning / late evening unless you book a spa treatment).
Late checkout: Requested 3pm checkout which was granted without question although they failed to code the cards appropriately.
A very enjoyable stay and with midweek rates at half that of weekends it was a great deal.

Breakfast: Included. Can be in-room as well.
Amenity: 85 pounds to be spent on food and beverages from minibar, restaurants, and in room dining.

Very good stay. The check-in staff even escorted me to my room, and a bottle of champagne delivered to my room (!) when I was away for afternoon tea. Would recommend.

Canceling and rebooking an FHR reservation
I've done this in the past, but this week I've rebooked a hotel in San Francisco twice to get a lower rate for an upcoming stay (saving over $150 for the stay). It looks like the cancellation of some large conferences are going to put pressure on the hotels and prices will likely come down a lot more in the short term
So, if you're choosing to travel, keep an eye on your FHR rate to see if you can't cancel and rebook to get a better rate closer to your travel date.

The Langham NYC
Room Booked: Junior Suite
Upgrade: Junior Suite, Empire State View
I've been staying here pretty regularly on FHR rate, and they scrupulously honor the benefits. This is one of my favorite hotels in the world, the service is fantastic. Rooms are very classy as well, though there is quite a bit of variation depending on location. I'd be comfortable booking the base level and just taking an upgrade to Deluxe, which is spacious and comfortable. The Empire State View Suites are phenomenal. Breakfast does not quite match the rest of the experience.

Conrad Koh Samui
Booked 1 Bedroom King Ocean View Pool Villa
Upgraded to 1 Bedroom Premium Ocean View Villa
Early check-in wasn't needed
Late check-out was offered and used
Amenity: $125 food credit (covered one meal since restaurant is expensive)
Wifi free and pretty good
Beakfast: Free breakfast for my wife, myself and my daughter
Conrad went above and beyond when they delivered a Conrad plushie bear with an embroidered robe that had my daughter's name on it! She loved it!
Great hotel, beautiful view and amazing service. We loved the private infinity pool that each villa has. Very good sized pool, we used it daily! Only negative (and this was out of their control) is we stayed at height of COVID-19. The spa and Jahn restaurant were closed and Zest had a limited menu. Boat trips to the islands were also suspended. Resort was empty, we'd typically see one other table at dinner, so I understand why but still sucked. Overall we would stay here again when things are back to normal.

You didn't miss much :
- Jahn is nice but not that special
- The best thing of the spa is the view
- The free boat trip to the island : the boat ride is nice, the island is not, crowded, dirty

Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North
Upgrade: Offered one class upgrade from Premier to Vista Casita, but turned it down on advice of FDA.
Early Checkin: Arrived around 1:30 and room was ready
Late Checkout: 4 pm offered and taken
Amenity: $100 resort credit. Used for dinner at Proof, which was very good.
Breakfast: Asked several times, but never got a straight answer on the benefit. Breakfast charges of around $70 per day were removed at check-out gratuity was not.
Overall a very nice stay. Property is slowly recovering from COVID-19. They're having trouble getting staff back off unemployment, which is preventing them from opening all the rooms for sale. "Sold out" at just over 50% capacity this weekend (and the pool was packed Saturday and Sunday). Nice to be able to dine on-site and order room service. Food quality was excellent, except they burned the bagel/avocado toast at breakfast both mornings (yes, we sent it back).
Lots of value on the FHR rate here.

Lodge at Torrey Pines
Upgrade: Booked Reserve King, received Reserve King. The property appeared to be sold out of the Palisades rooms one category up.
Early Checkin: n/a
Late Checkout: Offered at check in, not used.
Amenity: $100 spa credit, converted to $100 food and beverage credit as the spa was closed due to COVID-19.
Breakfast: $60/day, available at the Grill or through in-room dining. I ate at the Grill and never saw a charge including for gratuity.
A nice weekend getaway amidst the pandemic. Really good service across the board here. Hotel is operating at 50% room capacity and has both of its restaurants open (A.R Valentien for dinner only Wed-Sun), although the bar stools have been removed from the bar areas. Very consistent and reassuring health practices evident throughout the property, most critically the required use of masks by guests and employees in all public areas (even in the restaurants until you reach your table). Some resort activities are suspended, but the pool was fully operational and of course the golf courses were busy dawn to dusk. I'd stay here again, although if you're not a golfer I think about two nights is sufficient length.

Thanks, I can finally go there and we are thinking of trying the Shilla hotel. I will try to mention the FHR booking at check-in and see what they say. For the room upgrade, it is said that certain category of rooms are not eligible for upgrade: is there any way to know this myself before booking? Or do I have to call PTS?
