The United gift registry has been discontinued.

Reminder: you must enroll and select UA as your airline BEFORE making a reimbursable purchase. Unless you check your bags or experience change fees, United has the fewest options for reimbursement because of the codes they use for transactions.

United does not sell giftcards. As of December 2016 American Express no longer reimburses MPX transactions.

Airline Taxes on Award Tickets
Doesn't seem to work anymore; see post 179 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/25297196-post179.html and #391
Economy Plus and First Class Upgrade Fees
As of December 2016 there were conflicting posts; one stating that an upgrade to E+ coded as an "upgrade fee" and was, therefore, not reimbursed. Others said they were reimbursed as it was coded as "preferred seat upgrade." In February 2019, three separate FTer reported receiving varying amounts of reimbursement (dependent upon which card was used for the purchase) after purchasing an E+ annual subscription. The E+ subscriptions code as "preferred seat upgrade". Upgrading from E to FC will also not be reimbursed because it codes as a passenger ticket even when done after buying the original ticket. There seems to be a distinction between seat upgrades being reimbursed, while ticket upgrades are not.
Award Accelerator
I would not risk this. The last report of being reimbursed for Award Accelerator was for $68 on October 27, 2011. Every post about Award Accelerator since has reported "No reimbursement."
Eligible incidental fees include:
  • Checked baggage fees (including overweight/oversize)
  • Itinerary change fees
  • Phone reservation fees
  • Pet flight fees
  • Seat assignment fees (E+)
  • In-flight amenity fees (beverages, food, pillows/blankets, headphones)
  • In-flight entertainment fees (excluding wireless internet because it's not charged by the airline)
  • Airport lounge day passes & annual memberships
  • Onboard WIFI

Thanks. I went ahead with that since the guaranteed seat in F was worth it in this case for me -- plan to catch up on some work and the bigger seat makes me more productive.

Smile Upgrades are eligible for the Reimbursement ??

FWIW, I renewed my UA Travel Club Membership and received the $25 credit back from AMEX within a couple of days. Yesterday, I chose an option to upgrade 2 o/w ORD-TPA tickets to P class for $159 each or a total of $318. Should I expect a $175 credit ($200 less the $25 credit from the UA Club) anytime soon ?

Upgrades are specifically excluded as "incidental expenses", per the AMEX T&C's. So while I wouldn't expect to get a credit, you may get lucky. Buon viaggio!

Just had my third UA change fee in a row not trigger a credit. This is getting old.

They will reimburse it if you call in, right? Not that it makes the experience less frustrating, just trying to understand if change fees are supposed to be credited.

Yes. My experience is they will manually credit if you call. The issue is that UA has been coding them wrong from Amex's perspective (even though the narrative detail shows "change fee" on the receipt.

I recently called AMEX to credit my $50 change fee for an award redeposit, they said it will post in 4 weeks! Did yours post immediately?

It wasn't immediate, but it wasn't four weeks either. I think it was about a week or so (but don't remember precisely).

So can you no longer apply AMEX airline fee credit towards United? Still getting under maintenance until early 2018 on their gift registry page.

You can if you (examples) pay luggage, change or seat selection fees, or buy access to the United Club.

Biz plat. Had to change 2 United award tickets and was charged 2x $100 change fee plus additional taxes (approx. $30/ticket). Charges showed up as 4 separate line items on the Amex account ($100, $100, $30, $30). A few days later, the $200 credits posted but not as $100 and $100. Credits showed up as $100, $30, $30 and $40.

I just received an offer via email from United to purchase miles with a bonus "mystery miles offer". Does anyone think this purchase would qualify for the AMEX plat $200 rebate?

Also, I'm still waiting for a $50 award cancellation fee to be rebated (it's a little more than a month now) - I guess I will give them a call.
