Amex no longer backdating new accounts to credit bureaus?
I got this news from an other forum and I called amex and they did confirm me that...
That's a really bad news for me because my mother will come to the States in few months and idea was to use the amex transfer to get her start her credit history (amex member since 2002).

It's been well known that AMEX doesn't backdate to the original cardholders date. It was abused for a long time.

If I understand correctly, you are referring to supplementary cardholders (authorized users) or to accounts opened using Global Transfers?

In the U.S., Amex is purportedly no longer backdating new accounts that first report after March 21, 2015.
I have a personal experience that roughly confirms this. I was approved for two Amexes in February. One reported on March 21 as opened in 1986. The other reported a few days later as opened in 2015.

Sounds as if Amex decided to continue recognizing membership with backdating to original Amex card, while wanting to report credit use to the three bureaus in real time for each actual card.

Is this confimed? Need some more proof I think.
I wonder if this is a way Amex thought of to prevent people from cancelling Costco cards when it's time to do so. I canceled my costco card just this weekend thinking that the length of history don't matter since I can always get it back when I get another card. But this strategy can also bite them as their card no longer look as attractive without the whole backdating.

Slightly out of topic:
I did not know the backdating was available until this weekend. My Costco/AMEX says my member since 1998. I actually had AMEX green charge card in 1990. I cancelled it once AMEX offered fee-free credit card such as Optima.
1. The green charge card was cancelled years ago. May I ask AMEX to change my "member since" back to the year I had the charge cards?
2. How do I provide a proof? Does AMEX keep all of card history from years ago under same social security number?
3. If AMEX accepts my request to backdate "member since" to 1990, will it reflect "opened since" of my Costco AMEX on my credit report?
Thanks!
