Depends what you want to do with the points. Cash out? Then $500. Use it towards Biz class airfare on an airline transfer? Closer to $1000.
The Plat card is good if you will use its benefits...Lounge, Airline credits, Global Entry reimbursement, etc.
Just building points? Wait for another Amex Gold PRG so you can get 2X and 3X points on some spends.

Pulled the trigger on the MB Plat 50k signup since the rep I talked to said they wouldn't match the MB signup to the normal plat. Oh well, guess I'll just have to apply for a regular plat once a good offer comes out and cancel the MB.

The MB Plat is an incredible deal, even with the $475 fee, IMO. You can get the $200 airline credits twice (once in 2013, and again in 2014) with paying the fee only once - basically like you are only paying $75 for the card. Obviously the lounge access/SPG Gold/$100 Global Entry credit are great perks as well. The 50,000 points (for only needing to spend $1k) have huge value transferring them to Avios, especially for short domestic trips. I can fly from DSM<->DFW for only 4500 Avios each way. It's a steal!

I've been with AmEx since 1987, and have yet to receive a Platinum offer. I'm not a huge spender, but I do rack up about $100K a year on my existing AmEx card.
