What are AAdvantage Gold Benefits? Are they worth it?

C/Y 2019 Gold status requirements: $3,000 EQD* earned, AND 30 segments or 25,000 EQ Miles

*See FT: Earning EQD / Elite Qualifying Dollars on AA and partner airlines (2017 on)

Members no longer must fly at least 4 segments on American during the qualifying year to receive AA elite status. This requirement ended in 2017.

Status will last the status year when status is earned and the following status year. E.g. Status earned in 2020 will end 31 Jan 2022.

Just to be clear - you must earn Gold (or whatever) status by 12/31, not Feb 29. The status earned in a calendar year is valid until the end of February of the year following, so the status is valid for 14 months but flights taken on January 1 or later will count towards the 2024 status calculation, not 2023.

Not true. AA’s qualification period is now March to February.

Son is flying to England next month for a university exchange. He gets one free bag (AA baggage allowance to Europe). I assume that is not stackable with AA Gold status. In other words, he gets ONE free bag but not two (based on Gold status OR based on AA baggage rules to Europe)....correct?

That's correct, it won't stack.

Gold will defeat the basic economy restrictions transatlantic (i.e. you'll get your baggage allowance) though if that makes any difference in deciding the fare to purchase.
