General Information
Glossary: MCO - Miscellaneous Charges Order

AA issues e-vouchers to those in US 50 states, US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as of 28 Nov 2019. Printed green vouchers are still used for those residing elsewhere at this time.

Transportation vouchers issued by American Airlines or American Eagle® are valid for travel on American Airlines, American Eagle and American Airlines codeshare flights (AA*).

These vouchers are also valid for travel on oneworld® itineraries (including oneworld affiliates that must be booked as a codeshare flight marketed by a oneworld carrier) where American Airlines or American Airlines codeshare flights (AA*) is the international carrier.

Note: For oneworld itineraries, international flights are defined as transatlantic, transpacific and flights to and from South America. Flights to and from Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, or Central America are not included.

Travel agents may accept American Airlines vouchers (042/043) for full or partial payment for a ticket as an "exchange" document/ticket. If the voucher is less than the ticket the additional monies are collected. If the voucher exceeds the ticket cost an MCO will be issued for the difference as a residual indicating non-refundable and for American Airlines transportation only. Valid one year from date of issue ((you must encumber the voucher before one year has expired since issuance*). There is no change fee / ASC associated with using a voucher. Updated 18 Feb 2015.)

FAQ: AA Vouchers

Q. How do vouchers work on AA?

They are treated just like cash towards valid purchases.

Q. What can I use the vouchers on?
  • Airfare on American Airlines (inc. American Eagle), codeshares, and oneworld itineraries where AA is the international/"governing" carrier.
  • 500-mile domestic upgrade stickers (at the airport only).
  • Co-payments for upgrades or reduced mileage awards.
  • Excess baggage fees.
  • Special handling fees (e.g. checked pets), with a traveling passenger (i.e. not cargo).
  • Change fees, provided an additional collection of the fare is also being made.
There are special considerations if you are located in the following countries (may not be up to date):
  • In the UK, Belgium, Germany and France, vouchers are accepted for Net fares.
  • In Switzerland, vouchers are accepted on Q and L class Net fares only.
  • In Ireland, vouchers are accepted in Q, O and L class Net fares only.
Q. Can I use American Airlines travel vouchers to purchase a vacation package from AAVacations?

Yes, travel vouchers can be used toward the American Airlines and American Eagle flight portion of your trip, but may not be used to purchase any of the non-flight components of your trip such as hotels, rental cars, transfers, activities or insurance. Travel vouchers are not currently accepted online, but may be redeemed by calling AAVacations at 1-800-489-4810.

Q. Can I use the vouchers for ANYTHING else?

No.

Q. Really?

Yes, really.

Q. Are there restrictions on purchasing airfare?

Unlike other airlines that place restrictions on certain fares/dates/times/routes, AA vouchers are just like cash, so you can use them to buy all fares that are available for purchase.

Q. How long do I have to use the vouchers?

One (1) year from date of issuance.

Q. I can't use my voucher in time. How can I extend the expiration date?
AA automatically extended the expiration of some vouchers in 2021. If your expiration date was between January 1, 2021 and May 31, 2021, the new expiration is March 31, 2022.

If you still need to extend the expiration, spend at least part it on any of its valid uses listed above. For example, pay for a cheap throwaway ticket, a speculative ticket, or a 500-mile upgrade certificate. Any unused amount will be sent to you as a new voucher with a new 1-year expiration date.

Q. What if I lose a voucher?

Sorry, you're out of luck. Treat your vouchers like cash.

Q. Can I use the vouchers to buy tickets for someone else?

While vouchers are non-transferable, you may buy a ticket in someone else's name, so long as you are the one presenting the voucher (either by phone or personally at a ticket counter/office). If someone else presents the voucher, the ticket MUST be issued in the name of that on the voucher.

Q. Is there a fee for using the vouchers?

It appears that ticketing at an airport ticket office is still subject to a charge of $30, unless you are EXP.

Note that if you are EXP, these "booking" fees are waived (and any Agent that tells you otherwise is wrong). (thanks SquareDanceGuy)

Note that if you have booked the ticket online and go to the airport to apply a voucher, there are no fees either, regardless of status. (thanks RogerD408)

Q. What happens to the taxes?

This depends on the type of voucher. The following voucher codes are exempt from some of the taxes: Basically, if you use these vouchers to pay for the whole cost of your fare, you will lower the overall costs as some of the taxes do not apply. (thanks uncle wiggly) If you make a partial payment with vouchers, then the associated taxes will likewise be reduced by the same proportional amount. (thanks marshall)

OU is the only voucher taxable, as it's issued against the unused portion of a ticket that has been exchanged (amongst other things). (thanks hillrider)

Q. What if the value of my vouchers exceed the value of my fare? Do I lose it? (thanks ffay005)

Unlike some* other airlines, you do NOT lose the residual value of your vouchers. If the residual value is more than $5, AA will mail you another voucher back as change, and this voucher is valid for one (1) year after its issuance. (thanks whynotfly) *golfmad added the word "some" based on post #440.

Q. How many vouchers can I use at one time?

According to one AAgent, nine (9) was the maximum number of vouchers accepted by the system.

Q. I bought AA tickets from a 3rd party (e.g., travel agent, internet travel site, Priceline/Hotwire). Can I use the vouchers retroactively?

No.
Q. How long does it take to process the vouchers?

After they receive the vouchers, AA will process them within 1-3 days, so it's really dependent on how long it takes the mail to arrive to Florida. AA reservations will accept the vouchers for a phone booking, if the reservation made is at least 12 days prior to departure. It's recommended that if you need to ticket within 2 weeks that you go directly to an Airport Ticket Office, which can process your voucher/s immediately.

Q. How do I apply vouchers to a reservation I have on hold on AA.com?
  1. Call Web Services at 1-800-222-2377 or 1-918-832-1384 (6:00 AM - 2:00 AM CT, 7 days a week). In the UK, call 08-45-601-0619 (8:30 AM - 5:00 PM UK time, Monday-Friday).
  2. Give them the PNR and tell them you would like to apply vouchers.
  3. They will give you instructions on how to send the vouchers in.
  4. Pay any balance with a credit card.
Q. What's the address where I send my vouchers to?
US: up-to-date in March 2021, UK: up-to-date in January 2022

American Airlines
M.D. 8A701
Fort Worth, TX 76155
USA

The return address for those in the UK and the rest of Europe, who have agreed to send their voucher(s) to AA in the UK, is:

American Airlines
100 Old Hall Street
The Plaza, 7th floor
Liverpool L3 9QJ
United Kingdom

On the envelope under the return address, write:
<Date of first flight, in DD Month format (e.g. 01 Jan)>

Attach a sticky note to the vouchers with the following details:
<First flight number, e.g. AA1234>
<Last name>
<Booking record locator, AKA booking reference>

(Notice: vouchers are not processed sequentially based on date of the voucher/s being received by AA, but rather on flight dates. Flights may show as "Ticket Pending" once the voucher has been applied, and at some time prior to flight (two weeks is usual) it will show "Ticketed" and you should be able to see your ticket number, beginning with "001", in your receipt from your itinerary at aa.com or in your e-Ticket. Also notice that you should photocopy your voucher/s prior to mailing them.)

Q. What if I entered a Business Extra number?

You will have to contact Business Extra to apply the vouchers. Their number is 1-800-433-1790, and they are available 5:00 AM - 12:00 PM, CT, 7 days a week.

Q. What if I live outside the United States and I want to use vouchers?

As the vouchers are in US Dollars, it's probably most convenient to call the US reservations number for a new booking denoted in US Dollars, thus avoiding any currency conversion, except any associated with your credit card. You can call your local reservations number or visit a local Airport Ticket Office (ATO). Beware that there's not a large network of ATOs.

In all likelihood, you will be asked to mail your voucher(s) to AA, so if time is of the essence, you should consider going directly to an ATO, who can process it/them immediately.

Is that normal that I mailed in two vouchers for two separate PNR (same flight, different name), one got ticketed and one is still pending?
AA got it a few days ago.

Beware - do not make the same mistake as me

This might be a bit long, but please read as it can save you a ton of headaches!
I received a $1,100 transportation voucher from AA for voluntarily giving up my seat 2 months ago (voucher valid until 22 May 2019).
I went online to book a reservation for November 2018 from ORD-PHL-CDG (all on AA), then return LHR-EWR-ORD (LHR-EWR leg was on British Airways but with a AA flight number). I booked in premium economy for both legs and the total price was $1,445. I placed the reservation on hold like I was told to, then called the 1-800 number to redeem the vouchers immediately afterwards. The agent took down the voucher issue date, my record locator, my credit card number to cover the difference on the flight, gave me my British Airway confirmation number, and gave me all the instructions mentioned in previous posts about how to mail the vouchers to the address in Pensacola. I followed her instructions exactly and have picture proof of it and mailed the vouchers the following morning (12 hours after talking to the agent), I even have picture proof of my AMEX statement showing the AA authorization on the card the night I talked to the initial agent.

I log online a day later (more than 24 hours from booking time) and the reservation is not listed in my account anymore, so I manually find the reservation via my record locator, and the reservation said "canceled." I called my friend who also had AA vouchers to use, is also flying on the same flights, and also booked at the same time as me but on a separate record locator and her reservation said "ticket pending."

I called the AA Elite Desk last night to discuss this with them and talked to 2 different agents for 1 hour and 45 minutes. In a nutshell they could see that the original quote was $1,445 but the new price was going to be above $1,650. Their reasoning was that they can not manually adjust British Airways fares and so could not guarantee me the $1,445 fare I originally had. The agent I spoke with was very helpful and kept digging around and I kept my cool but of course started getting forceful. The agent fully understood that I should not have to pay $200 more because of an agent error or a system error on AA's part. After a long night on the phone he was able to get me on a different flight home that was on all AA aircraft for about $1,550 but said I would have to write into Customer Relations to request a refund for the difference. I asked him and his supervisor why they cannot pay the difference for me or provide me a gift card or something else (among several other things I asked) to cover the difference and AA does not allow them that power and I would have to write into customer relations for that (customer relations is e-mail only he said and he can't even call them). He took down all the notes from our call in my record so customer relations will see it. Hopefully they refund me the difference or else I will have to start really barking up the chain of command at AA for this and pulling in more people.
Once we settled on the $1,550 flight I told him about the tax exempt policy, which of course made him have to go call other people to get the information on that. Only the people in Pensacola know that, so if you call an agent make sure to tell them that because it is not clearly written in the policy they see on their screen.

Moral of the story: When you talk to the agent on the phone make sure they have placed your reservation in "ticket pending" status, then log-in to your account when you get off the phone with them to make sure it says that or else it will get canceled automatically and you will run into the same issues I did. He said it might say ticket pending for a few months since they process the vouchers in Pensacola based on the departure date, so it might not say "ticketed" until October but is still confirmed.

Something like that happened to me in April, so I learned to double check this kind of thing. The agent did not put my ticket into a pending status or whatever is the right term so the reservation was incorrect. Fortunately I had not yet mailed the voucher and put a new ticket on hold the next day at the same price.

Last week I also started the process to redeem a voucher. Perhaps from reading here I was smart enough to check my ticket status after the call which did change to ticket pending which I figured (it seems correctly) the AA reservation folks did the right thing. We'll see if the rest of this process goes smoothly or not (they only got my voucher this morning).

Edit: Voucher arrived at AA FL address Wednesday morning per FedEx tracking. Got email confirmation ticket was booked very early on Friday Morning. So basically around two days from receipt to ticketing (trip date is Feb 2019).

I have always had really good luck and no issues when getting my tickets issued of off a voucher. Done it about 5-6 times and in other people's names and it's never been more than a day or two after it arrives.

Had a $500 voucher from a voluntary bump back in March. Priced an itinerary I wanted and called the EXP line. The agent ran the process and applied my SWUs (domestic, but the only chance I’ll have to use the last 2 before expiration) and priced the trip at $472. He told me I had to mail the voucher, that the airport ticket counter couldn’t help me.

I went to the airport counter anyway, and after about 10-12 minutes on the helpline, the airport agent had me ticketed for $415. I’m presuming the difference is the tax difference I’ve read about for using vouchers. I walked away with a new voucher for 85 bucks (dated today with 1 year to use) and my confirmed, purchased ticket.

All told not a bad experience, made easier because I’m only 10 minutes from a small airport. I was not excited about dealing with the mail, and doing it this way gave peace of mind that everything was handled.

Put the flight on hold. Call the AA Call center and tell them you want to use the vouchers, that will extend the amount of time the ticket will be held for free. They will give you the address and instructions for what you need to do. Not sure how long it will take to get mailed to the US, it goes to Florida. Maybe there is a UK option to mail it to. Just make sure you do it sooner rather than later.

Thanks! This is what I ended up doing earlier today. I called the UK line and I will have to email the voucher to a UK address. All this is something that I'd done before.

However, because this time the booking is for someone else, I will have to include a letter of authorisation, specifying that I would like to use the voucher for someone else's booking, and a copy of my passport/id.

I have some tickets on hold while the vouchers are being mailed. Instead of saying Pending Ticketing (or whatever the usual verbiage is), they say "On Request". It's all BA flights under AA codeshare numbers. The agent on the phone knew this would be voucher tickets, and they have not been cancelled yet (it has been more than 1 calendar day since I booked them). Should I be worried?

The passport/ID copy is different than my experience. I booked a flight for my mom using vouchers and one for my sister in law and I never had to send anything else in besides the voucher and flight information. Not sure if that is a UK thing or an update, my purchase for them was 6-7 months ago.

I recently completed the phone process for using a voucher after putting the reservation on hold and I'm ready to mail my voucher to Pensacola. But I have 2 questions.
1. Taxes: My vouchers will not cover the full amount so unfortunately I will pay for segment fees, PFC, security fee but I shouldn't have to pay the domestic passenger ticket tax of 7.5% for the part covered by the voucher. They processed it full tax (I explained it several times and even asked they call the tariff desk but they told me that their supervisor said there is no rule) so I was tired of fighting them and it was my 3rd HUCA attempt, so I just figured, Pensacola would take care of it as they were familiar with the rule. Will they??

2. The vouchers (there are 2 being used) are in my name and my step fathers name: I believe I mentioned this but not sure, Ticket will be issued in my name Will they require documentation to process this like the guy from the UK said he was asked to provide?

We booked a family trip last June. Scheduled to fly in December. Unfortunately my grandmother got sick and we had to cancel the trip. Now I want to use the credit toward a flight in August. I thought I was good because I was flying within a year of the original travel date, but AA told me its 1 year from the BOOKING date.

What is my best option to extend the certificates a few months? The agent I spoke to said booking a flexible fare and then canceling it will not work, but is she right? Could I sell the certificates or use it for something else other than flights?

Thanks!

Anyone have an update on this? I booked a fully refundable fare for Sept with an expiring paper voucher back in April. I paid the difference with a CC and the agent said I could cancel for a full value refund if necessary (including the voucher amount). TIA
