I recently upgraded to First Class on a night flight and I'm on an AA 737-800 seat 1F at a bulkhead. Should I change my seat? What are others experiences in First Class on AA?

I have never understood the love for row 1, as my bags usually end up over row 3 because I don't crowd the gate to be the first person on the plane. I even turned down an upgrade last week because they wanted to put me in 1D (from exit row) but it also was just a 45 minute flight.

I don't necessarily disagree - I wouldn't do a paid upgrade on this route either. But if this is OP's first time, they're at least getting a data point of first-hand experience. There's value in that; can use it for future decisions.

It IS my first time. The upgrade was $68.00 and you are right. I can't pass up this opportunity to be in First Class. Who knows if it will come up again?

The best experience is this (I experienced all of this once, flying out of DFW of all places; usually I get 1 or 2 of these): 0* - this is a unicorn so just listing as a dream) Check in agent who wishes you well and treats you better as a first class pax, perhaps thanks you for loyalty and for flying AA and maybe even calls you by name. 1) GA who actually enforces boarding groups, after scanning your boarding pass in group 1, says "Thank you, Mr./Mrs./Miss XXX, for choosing to fly American. I hope you enjoy your flight." 2) You go into the plane and are greeted by the crew with a hello. After being seated your attendant addresses you by last name as the GA did and get a PDB order for you and the others up front and serves you before you taxi to the runway in an actual glass. 3) Once in air you get prompt service and drink and (if applicable) food orders, again being addressed by name and served with effectively unlimited drinks (unless you're getting sloppy, in which case they should cut you off) in real glass. If you have status it is acknowledged and you are thanked for your choosing AA and for your loyalty. I have actually had this happen a few times when seated in MCE (minus the actual glass vessels), with attendants thanking me by name for being Exec Plat; I also witnessed these FA's acknowledging all F pax by name and being incredibly hospitable. 4) On deplaning you get similar thanks from the crew. At worst, you get none of the above, no PDB, no in flight beverage or snack/food service, zero personal service, a pissy flight crew who seem aggravated to be doing anything at all on the place, and you are forced to gate check your bag, even as an F pax (or all of the F bins are full of stuff belonging to flight crew and/or pax in the back). I have not personally experienced all of this but I am sure others here certainly have. Again, you still have a bigger seat and get to deplane first so it is nicer. First row bulkhead seats are not always the best as they may have less legroom, they have no under seat storage in front of you, your tray will come out of your armrest rather than from the seat in front of you, and your bin overhead may have a first aid kit or something along those lines in it (or you may not have a bin). They may also be so close to a lavatory or a galley that there is extra smell and/or noise that you might not want. Look at the airplane type you are flying in and go to aerolopa.com for an accurate seat map and description of what you are getting into. For your flight it is AA Boeing 738K seat plan - aeroLOPA | Detailed aircraft seat plans . I tend to prefer the second row from the back when in domestic first class - still getting maximal recline, having a one row buffer between me and MCE in case there are crappy pax in MCE's front row, whilst being away from lav and galley. It truly is personal preference, though. |

On my last business trip, an upgrade was offered to me for $97 I saw no value in it as I rarely drink alcohol; have no interest in the contents of the snack basket and bigger seat on such a short flight is not worth $97.
If nothing else, the OP is going to get a chance to experience first class himself so he will be able to form his own opinion. And, $68 seems like a reasonable price for that look see. Just because you don't find value in first class doesn't mean nobody else does. |

First time in first class 2 -when do i go?
As noted in a previous thread, I got the opportunity to upgrade to First Class on an American Airlines flight 737-800 ORD-DCA.
But the flight AA1608 leaves Ohare at 6:50 and gets into DCA around 10 pm There is a flight I can transfer to, AA1269 that leaves ORD 6:21 am and lands in DCA at 9:20 am. Same plane, no cost to upgrade. Not a fan of waking up early to get to the airport but should I take this day's flight, the first flight out, and not be prone to delays? What if the night flight is delayed? |

enjoy your ride up front. It will be great, tell the FA it’s your first time up front and I’ll bet the will go the extra 1.6 kilometers to make it special.

Many folks on here can come across as jaded when it comes to this type of thing, but just ignore it. You can worry about value and service level on your 10th flight up front. For your first time, just appreciate it for what it is. Hopefully you get a great FA who offers a pre departure drink and superb service throughout. But, even if that doesn't quite work out, you're still going to enjoy it.
