With the dearth of JFK/HND JAL J/F award inventory these days (even last-minute), being able to use a SWU on this route would be nice. Though if it's at the expense of one of the two JAL flights, ...

It's very possible that JL switches one of the flights to NRT to connect with their bank of Asian flights. Selfishly hoping for 3x JFK-HND but I'll take 3x JFK-TYO.

-If they have any 773s to spare, I'm guessing they'll start with this
*it's a flagship route
*they might receive a bit of love from the DOT for maximizing capacity

I think this is gonna be the likely outcome. I could even see JL putting a 788/9 on the NRT route like they did with a few flights this past winter on their non-daily JFK-NRT route.

If AA/JL wanted to add a JFK-NRT flight, there is nothing stopping them from adding it tomorrow, right? So I can't imagine that is the end game.
And I'd think if there was a NRT flight between the 2 carriers, it's more likely that it's AA operated. NRT traffic would be less premium and for connections. Quite honestly that is a better fit for the AA brand vs JL. They are still competing with ANA with 2x/daily JFK-HND and if AA/JL split the frequency they might lose passengers to ANA.
I think AA would run a 772 vs 773 largely because how can AA offer F on this route when they have a JV with JL and the difference between AA and JL F would be so massive. At least until AA F is eliminated

Looks like AA has been tentatively awarded the JFK-HND flight:

Edit to add AA release: American Airlines welcomes tentative approval for JFK-HND

If you're booking on miles it'll still be a no brainer to go with JAL on their nonstops from JFK, but the ability to use a SWU on AA metal JFK->HND is fantastic!

I hope they add more codeshares too. I've never need able to book a flight from Tokyo to Seoul on aa miles for some reason.

Hawaiian just have returned a nighttime HND slot. AA might move its evening HND-LAX by a couple of hours to 10pm departure to utilize that nighttime slot (since arrival of red-eye LAX-HND is already within 'nighttime'), free up one daytime slot, and use for 2nd DFW or elsewhere.. This is definitely a better proposal than UA's potential GUM flight although shifting daytime slot destination may pose a challenge. Let alone AA is short of widebody.

Looks like the AA flight will tentatively be an early afternoon arrival making it pretty much impractical to connect to SEA-bound red-eyes.
Per OMAAT:
I’ve complained about this already on the JL forum, but it’s very annoying that the only practical AA/JV TPAC flights for further connections are BOS and DFW to NRT. I understand that ultimately HND is all about O/D (including the JL SEA schedule) and this is clearly where everyone thinks the money is, since the situation is only marginally better with UA/NH.
Per OMAAT:
New York to Tokyo Haneda departing 10:00AM arriving 1:05PM (+1 day)
Tokyo Haneda to New York departing 3:05PM arriving 3:10PM
Tokyo Haneda to New York departing 3:05PM arriving 3:10PM
