Curious data point.
Flying PHL-DFW-RNO today, the first leg I was 9th of 45 on the upgrade list, with J0 or J1, I forget. 45 huh, I guess this new thingy with all golds and plats being on the list. For DFW-RNO I think it was J1 this morning and I was 4/21. However, while flying on the first leg I was upgraded and the new list was 19 long. So I guess some seats may have opened up with other pax changing their plans. By a useful coincidence, my traveling companion (my bridge partner) and I are now seated together, 1E/1F. He had done a miles/cash upgrade and cleared the second leg but not the first. But we were on a B787 in PE, where the seats are pretty comfortable anyway. If not for my input he'd have been on a later flight to DFW on an A321, MCE but still nowhere near as nice as PE. |

I have 80% Success SJU-MIA-SJU and 100% MIA - LAX -MIA, but I've been focusing 777's. We will see what happens now that AA Gold and PPro's are in the mix... I do find that if I book inside 100 hours, the upgrade comes 24-48 hours from departure. If I book beyond 100 hours, the upgrade is right on the mark. On the 777's I'm booking when 7-8+ seats are showing available in C.

I'm AA Plat and primarily fly LAX-JFK-- was upgraded on flights in Jan & Feb 2022 (and was upgraded 80% of the time throughout 2021, including the first half of the year when I was Gold). Then starting this month (March) my flights were completely full / no one cleared for upgrade. As a note I flew Monday 6am on outbound (#5/13 on upgrade list) and Tuesday 4:30pm on return (#3/11 on upgrade list). Noticed there werent any of the usual in-app buy-up offers on the return (there was however a buy-up offer of $242 on the Monday outbound flight which I kinda wish I took advantage of...)
Flying back in a couple weeks (mid-week, early AM flights) and will be interested to see how those pan out... |
Today lax-Dfw
I’m 2 out of 31 for 1 seat Update at boarding: I was 4 out of 44 for 0 seats |
Data point - 3/10 4:15p SJC>PHX, Gold, 42 out of 55. A319. Flight actually ran out of carry-on space before group 4 completed boarding which was a new one for me.
Out of four flights in the past two weeks my lowest upgrade list slot was 36th. In the past I generally saved my certs that I earned from business travel to use for personal, which I haven't done in a couple years due to COVID restrictions at several preferred destinations. Sure glad I saved them now. |

truly amazed a gold would get upgraded on anything.
The DFW-PHL upgrade was completely unexpected. And on a previous flight for same route I would have cleared as a gold but they had a catering error and closed F with three seats left. Not expecting much better as a PLT, but always grateful for any comps and buy when I really want it. |

DEN-CLT last week 15th on the upgrade of about 30 people for 1 seat. Hah! Stickers automatically requested, but I knew that was never going to work out. I did get an ok MCE aisle seat on the fully booked flight by watching the seat map like a hawk once we got into T-24 so that wasn't too dreadful JFK-MIA coming up Monday. Stickers automatically requested. Cleared into domestic "J" on the 772. I never got a notice or email about that working out, but I checked at T-48 and could select new seats myself. |
if a exec platinum is requesting a complimentary upgrade vs a pro plat is trying to use a SWU... will the exec platinum clear first ?

Yes. Status always wins. You should be ahead of all other PPros.

Upgrade confirmed when I wasn't expecting it: Yesterday morning J Seat map (no open seat) three seats for sale; F seat map all open; This morning 92 hours time point: woke up to email indicating my J upgrade was confirmed. No seats available to select, two seats for sale. F, one seat taken. Looks like RM knows what they are doing indeed: overselling J is the name of the game.

Can anyone in the know tell me if the upgrade window (72 hours for me) is the case for international flights as well?

For complimentary upgrades on short haul international flights (like Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, etc.) the 100/72/48/24 hour upgrade windows work the exact same as domestic flights. But if you're talking about using SWUs or miles/co-pay upgrades on long haul international flights then the complimentary upgrade windows do not apply. Upgrade space can open up at any time right up to the gate, although historically speaking on moderately full flights around 24 to 48 hours before is where you'll see the most activity. |
