iirc if you cancel the flight the miles use for seat assignments are non refundable.

For a voluntarily cancellation, you're SOL on any seat fees (paid or miles).
For an involuntary cancellation (AA canceled your flight, IRROPS leading to misconnect, schedule change results in missing MCT) you are eligible for a refund.
