Official MCT / Minimum Connection Times for MIA (assuming same terminal):
NOTE: Though 1:35 is the given MCT International to Domestic (and 1:35 international to international), one should not consider that useful for everyone connecting international to domestic unless one has Global Entry or luck.
International arrivals at MIA requires most passengers to fill out a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Declaration Form 6059B - one per family - process U.S. Immigration, retrieve baggage at arrivals carousels, process through U.S. customs, re-check baggage, proceed to either the TSA connections security processing queue or landside and process TSA security (with onward boarding pass) to return airside. (Read on for exceptions.)
This does not apply if you are connecting international to international and have red "ITI" tags on your checked baggage. You will have to produce the Form 6059B and still pass through USCBP, albeit without baggage.
Other than for U.S. passport holders and passengers with USDHS ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization under the Visa Waiver Program), who may use kiosks that expedite the arrivals process, Immigration, Customs and TSA Security queues can at times be tortuous and one would do better scheduling a connection time closer to 2:30 (or even 3:00) for a comfortable international to domestic or to international connection for non-ESTA / non-U.S. passport holders.
If one is enrolled in Global Entry and can use the dedicated kiosks and expedited queues, the process is speediest as there are clearly marked queues after the self-clearing kiosks and one is not required to possess a Form 6059B.

Downtown Miami Due to increased security checkpoint wait times, you should allow yourself at least 3 hours between connections if you do not have Priority or Pre✓. A taxi to the city center should take approximately 12-17 minutes and will cost approximately $22. Because traffic to and from the airport can be unpredictable, consider taking the Metrorail Orange Line in lieu of a taxi. It is a 15-minute ride from the airport to the city center and trains run every 10-15 minutes except late nights. A roundtrip is $4.50.
Miami Beach Allow at least 3½ hours between connections due to the possibility of heavy traffic on the highways between the beach and the mainland. A taxi to the beach should take approximately 22-27 minutes and will cost $35 (flat rate) if going south of 63rd Street. For reference, South Beach and most of the tourist spots are south of 23rd Street. Consider taking the 150 Miami Beach Airport Express bus from the airport to the beach. It is a 31-minute ride from the airport to the Lincoln Road Mall and buses run every 20 minutes. A roundtrip is $4.50.

Problem is in MIA, these terminals are not connected. So one will have to explain why one is going into a terminal which does not allow access to your gate.

Arrived in MIA from an international flight on Sat, now it was a day after the FLL shooter incident, so I don't know how that impacted things. But Getting to Global entry was even an issue.
There was some construction that limited access to the entrance to the halls that lead into customs, plus customs was all backed up. We walked for at least 7 mins of solid line, 5 people wide, just to reach the front of the queue to access GE which was open. You had to push past people who were bottle necked in the terminal getting into the customs line. As there was no side aisle for GE folks to walk through.
Crazy just to get to that point, then waited for over an hour to get my bags out in baggage claim. Lucky my flight was 20 mins late, as I was going to TSA really slow precheck, at the time was flight was suppose to depart.
So if they are saying 1:35 mins as minimum time for international to domestic, I would say ONLY if you have carry on only, and only if NO backup in customs OR you have GE.

Crazy just to get to that point, then waited for over an hour to get my bags out in baggage claim. Lucky my flight was 20 mins late, as I was going to TSA really slow precheck, at the time was flight was suppose to depart.
So if they are saying 1:35 mins as minimum time for international to domestic, I would say ONLY if you have carry on only, and only if NO backup in customs OR you have GE.
I asked the people near the front of the line and they said they were 3 hrs in the customs line.

As JJeffrey suggested, I will give AA a ring to see they could put me onto the earlier flight. I was in fact on that earlier flight so I'm not entirely sure why AA has decided to move me?! I have assumed that it was cancelled thus the reason for moving me to later flight.
Once thing for sure from this, it has taught me to read EF properly!!

I know the MCT and know in most instances 4t minutes for DD connection is fine. My question is for a DD connection with original being JFK is this enough time. Do AA JFK-MIA flights get delayed often or since hub to hub generally aren't delayed?
I was booked JFK-MIA-SAT instead of through DFW by my office assistant. (It was cheaper by $20 was his response) Only have 47 minutes to connect. The one earlier JFK/MIA flight that would be a legal connection is too early for me to leave. Thus no option even for SDFC. Just trying to figure out the chances of actually making it home that night vs being stuck in MIA.

Had a slight brain freeze and cannot figure it out by Googling: by which gates of D terminal is the security you clear when doing an INT-DOM transfer? I am meeting someone who is travelling on a domestic, so want to make sure they wait for me in the right area. If anyone can remember some shops or other noticeable visual cues then it'll be even better.

Thinking about flying into MIA a week before Thanksgiving (Nov 23rd).
Like to fly on AA's 77W in J, but have heard scary stories about MIA's customs being chaos, AA's flight from LHR arrives at 4pm. Anyone experienced customs at MIA?? or should i fly into somewhere else and then fly down? Thxs

If travelling in Club or First, CLT or MIA may be preferable to JFK because you spend more time in a nice longhaul config and less time in AA's "domestic first" (WT+ equivalent).
Another point is that going through CLT, and particularly MIA, on the way back makes for a slightly longer overnight flight, hence more sleep. Personally I am not the biggest fan of JFK-LHR overnight, because the flight is so short.
But since this is the "Connect through MIA" thread, back to topic: as an EU, US or Canadian citizen, connecting through MIA will be just fine.

Could see about going through CLT. Bonus is that there's is frequently an A330 to/from MCO. If can get it then it makes for a logical easy connecting point.
