Hi. Your input on my current situation (below) would be much appreciated.

Question: Does J0 generally mean SWU not likely?

Additional context: AA175 DFW-NRT to depart next week. Purchased (W fare/Premium Economy fare) and SWU requested over 4 months out--back in early Nov 2018. I am EXP w/ EQD around $14k, traveling alone.

This flight is a LOT more crowded than I thought it would be, and it looks like this on EP:
J0 R0 D0 I0 W0 P0 Y6 B0 H6 K6 M5 L5 G0 V4 S0 N2 Q0 O0 E0

I don't think I have ever failed to get SWUs on the DFW-NRT route since I became EXP several years ago...but, then, I don't think I've ever been on a flight that showed J=0 the week before. So, I just wanted to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks so much for any input you might be able to give!

I believe next week is a relatively big holiday in Japan (it being the spring equinox). It’s also the beginning of Sakura season. So I am not totally surprised it’s a busy week for travel to Japan.

Yes, very unlikely. But there's a (very) small chance that if Y + W end up oversold, and if there are a couple of spare seats in J because of cancellations etc, they may move some folks from Y to W, and W to J, as op-ups.

Cleared an upgrade on SFO-DFW as a PP right at the 72 hour window. Pretty surprised when I got the email. I can't remember the last time I've gotten an upgrade confirmation so early.

Unfortunately, I don't think your chances are that great as a Gold. It's possible, but not looking the best. I'm sure there are probably 10+ CK/EXPs on that flight with requests for upgrades in already.

Thanks for the response. And another question....

A good friend who is a top tier elite with American offered to attempt to upgrade me using one of his SWUs. So he called AA this morning and was told I would have to be wait listed for the upgrade via the SWU on AA 50 DFW-LHR on 3/26.

So given my lowly Gold status, I'm curious to know which method has the better chance of getting the upgrade: the SWU or the 25K miles + $350 co-pay. I'm inclined to think the SWU....but I'm not sure.

Update.....well, it's good to have friends! And I now have an AA Business Extra Upgrade Award Certificate in my possession courtesy of another friend and fellow FTer. So my second question is.....would an SWU be the better instrument for the possible upgrade vs. the BE upgrade award cert?

SWU is valid on all coach fares (except basic economy), while I think the BXP requires a minimum fare class (may be wrong). Either than that potential distinction, their priority is equivalent and will have equal chance of clearing.

Thanks! I'm aware of the minimum fare class requirement concerning the BXP (I purchased a premium economy ticket and checked that out concerning the fare basis) so I'm good there.

So since I've got the SWU in play at the moment, I probably should just let that ride, correct?

I'm booked in premium economy, AUS-MIA-EZE on 3/18. Called AA to do miles + copay upgrade on AA 931 MIA-EZE and was waitlisted. ExpertFlyer is doing something strange. When I search AUS-MIA-EZE it shows C7 on MIA-EZE but searching MIA-EZE by itself I get C0. Is this related to the married-segment logic AA uses for awards? The flight is J7 R7 D7 I7 as of now.

Yes, it is. EF shows ghost C when searching thru a connection a lot. The data for MIA-EZE is correct.

2nd time in a few weeks this has happened...

Waitlisted with SWU from PE to J. Set an alert on EF for C space. Flying AA50 tomorrow (18 March) at 19:10.

I got an email from EF at 08:30 showing C space. I didn’t check my email until 14:30 today, however. I had refreshed the AA app numerous times this AM, however, and it always showed me in PE.

Once I saw the EF email, I checked EF again, seeing C3. I called the EXP desk and they saw the space and cleared me.

As I said, this is the 2nd time in a few weeks this has happened... get an EF alert on a waitlisted SWU and had to manually call AA and have them push it through.

Glad I confirmed it before the C space was exhausted. Another reason the $99/yr EF subscription has paid for itself, again.

Curious what EF says about AA 50 on 3/26. I'm waitlisted as well from PE to J on this flight with an SWU courtesy of a friend. However, when AA changed to the SWU from a mileage & co-pay request for the upgrade, they screwed up my res by entering a wrong flight number (or so I was told this morning after being on the phone for over an hour with three different agents). What was "ticketed" is still "ticket pending" and has been since Friday...which tells me there may still be an issue.

At least you got an alert.... Three weeks ago I didn't get one, was upgraded... Yesterday and early AM today I didn't get one... But today (1 hrs ago or so) I was upgraded. Seems to be hit or miss. But I agree, It's been nice having the subscription.

In fact, I've expensed it with work since now several in the office think I'm the travel agent for them.. Quietly the expense has been approved... Also noted that requests for me to check on things have quieted down a bit too.. LOL

AA1316 this morning DFW-PDX... 29/38 on the list.

Very elite heavy for a route that I don’t typically think of as super heavy.
