Nah, carriers aren't smart enough to think of that, are they?

They already do. Some CK members don't actually fly that much themselves. I mentioned in another post a friend of mine is an EA for senior execs. AA gave him CK even though he himself travels 2-3 times/year BUT books F/J travel for executives who themselves fly often.

IMO if F was always booked solid, it would be underpriced.

If you lower your price 10% you will need to do 25% more volume to make the same profit..
There are only so many seats, |

I assume miles/co pay clear like elite upgrades-status and then rolling 12 month spend.

Sunday's 8:15 AM EWR-CLT A-321 had one empty seat in F and no upgrade list. Sadly it was not the one next to me.
|
12/23 the 7:30 AM RDU-LGA E90 had one empty seat and no upgrade list
12/31 the 9:53 AM PHL-ORF CR7 had three empty F seats, two employees of other airlines in F and no upgrade list. Emptiest I've seen in a while. |
Flew MIA/PHX the evening of the 31st (spending midnight in the air) and there was an empty F seat next to me (with the vodka tonics flowing very easily). Y was jammed packed. Seems as though the days of light flights on certain days and times are gone.

I think these samplings of empty F seats in the last week of the year are more likely due to a large reduction of business/frequent travelers, and therefore a proportionate reduction of upgrade requests in the queue.

CLT - PIA 12/14 (Saturday) . My daughter was 1 of 2 passengers in FC on a CRJ 700. She said the other passenger slept the whole time, so she had attentive service from the FA.

AA619 PBI-ORD 12/31
Flight was booked full with 1 person (an NRSA) on the upgrade list. 2 people no-showed and the NRSA got a battlefield upgrade and the 738 went out 15/16 in F. |

The Sunday of a three day weekend typically means empty flights.
AA 4555 RDU-DCA EMB-175: 11/12 with no upgrade list and a uniformed pilot in 2A AA 1015 DCA-ORD 737-800: 14/16 with no upgrade list and three non revs cleared into F at the gate |
Another today. AA 5099 the 1:07 PM CRJ-900 from CLT-GSP had two empty F seats and two uniformed crew members in F as well. Of course when I'm on paid F that's when there are lots of open seats, not when I'm trying to upgrade :D
