Too early for Upgrade availability?

I'm looking to book a flight for June/July to Europe, PHL to EDI.
Biz class prices are very high at this point and I'm not expecting them to come down much, if at all.
My other thought was to look at a MC ticket and then use miles plus a copay.
I looked on EF and nothing is available for weeks.
My question is, is it too early to look for C upgrade bucket 8 months out??
When would those seats typically be released?
Thanks.

This is typical AA behavior with regards to releasing upgrade space in advance. Very common to see no upgrade space available even 8 months out, especially to Europe in the peak summer season. If space is still open it will most likely be released in the week before the flight. You can of course get on the waitlist, every now and then AA seems to release batches of upgrade space in advance, you never know when this can happen.

Thanks for the reply. Upgrade list for miles + copay may be the way to go.
Is that first come, first served or elite level? I'm only gold.

No, by elite first, then upgrade instrument, then EQD, followed by a couple other tiebreakers.

My observation is for flights that are too far out, the initial release is for flexible fares, so they are expensive per se. As it gets closer the more restrictive fares will be available.
