Not really - Viasat is used on some of AA's US/Canada/Mexico flights, so aside from Hawaii it's actually quite good

AA's widebodies have Panasonic which is pretty much global

Just adding a data point - flew from OGG to LAX yesterday on AA 254 and when we got to the gate (about 10m before boarding started) they were offering $800 vouchers for volunteers. Not sure what ended up happening but we pretty much left on time.

Not sure if HNL-LAX is an issue or perhaps it was just simply oversold.
Flew out for the weekend on the cheapo $350-ish r/t fare for the weekend.
Two of booked a few days before Friday and actually had our 500-mi upgrades clear on the outbound!
On the way home, at boarding in HNL, they were asking for 3 volunteers at $375 each. When that went up to $750 each, we volunteered, but didn't want to be separated so they didn't bump us.

Runway length isn't an issue at HNL, so your situation was probably a "traditional" oversell, i.e. sold more tickets than the number of seats on the plane. Only LIH (6,500 ft) and occasionally OGG (7,000 ft) have issues with short runways.
