Welcome to the 2018 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"
Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)

MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

We're glad you've chosen to join the Flyertalk frequent flyer community!

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)

Pillows in Y on 763?

Can't seem to get a clear answer to this. We're flying Y to AMS from PHL. Do they still provide pillows? Or has that been cut out for Y?

TIA.

Thank you very much! I just called and the "up" to the "normal" economy ticket is only 80 Euro. I did it!

Another question: How many hours can you enter the Flagship lounge before departure?

The same day, or the day before if the flight departs by 0600 the following day.

Unfortunately you answered my question by editing it and I can neither "thank you" nor can I quote you but ...

doesn't the flagship (@ ORD) closes at 2200? So, if my flight departs before 0600, can I enter the flagship before 2200 (the day beforehand) and stay / sleep there?

Thank you again!

What is your exact itinerary? You cannot stay in the Flagship Lounge overnight, if that's what you're asking.

Iirc, yes, they still offer small pillows and blankets on 763 transatlantic flights.

When the lounges close, they close and all guests must leave.

Look at https://www.sleepinginairports.net/u...cago_ohare.htm for options.

My itinerary is FRA-CLT-ORD-CLT-FRA. I hope I can enter the Flagship in ORD as (Finnair-)Sapphire!

Thank you!

You can of course enter the FL as a oneworld Sapphire, but it's still not clear what you meant above re: the timing of the flights. More details are needed. It seemed as if you were asking if you could stay overnight in the FL, which you cannot.

Just got off PHL-BUD, they had to change aircraft so had had a 4+ hour delay. We arrived at 13:45 instead of 9:30 They were nice - brought out food for everybody in PHL but we just went back to the AC. I was on a Award J ticket, should I ask for some miles or just let it go?

My question was:

How many hours can you enter the Flagship lounge before departure?
The answer was:

The same day, or the day before if the flight departs by 0600 the following day.
What does "or the day before" mean? What if my flight leaves at 0545?

That's why I was confused...

If you have a flight leaving ORD at 5:45a, then technically you can access the Flaghip Lounge the day before the flight, IF you could get airside access.

The "before 6am the following day" clause in lounge access rules is really meant for late night flights that depart after midnight. For example, say your're flying LAX-HKG departing at 1:30am, if that clause wasn't in the rules then lounge eligible passengers technically wouldn't have access to a lounge until the calendar day of departure, i.e. midnight, even if they arrived at the airport at 10 or 11pm or whatever, which is technically the day before the qualifying flight.

21 Days - No Fee AAdvantage AAward Question

Hi,
I know different ones count days differently (e.g., to some Day 0 is Day 1, etc.). When I make a 5 Day Hold on a Sunday, I have until midnight Friday to cancel or purchase, so I am assuming AA calls the period from “Sunday to Monday” Day 1 and so on.

I have an AAdvantage Award on Hold and am hoping a MileSAAver will become available before the fee-free deadline ends. I know I can ticket it online without fees up until 21 days before the trip. I know if there are less than 21 days, there are booking fees.

If I want to redeem an AAward without fees for a flight that leaves on the 22nd of a month, what is the last day I am able to do this without fees? Sorry if it's sounds like a basic question, but I’ve been burned before not knowing a company’s method of reckoning days.

Thanks!

The easiest way to figure it out is to go online at aa.com and make a dummy award booking for a flight 20/21/22 days out, and see what day triggers the fee.

How do EQM, RDM, EQD work if I buy a ticket via AA.com european site (amadeus) and all the flights are Marketed and Operated by another carrier? All flight numbers start with LA, QR, and JL. My understanding is that any flight marketed and operated by that carrier will earn via that carries partner award chart on AA.com regardless of the 001 ticket stock.

I think that applies to EQM and RDM. What about EQD? AA knows exactly what I paid for the fare so would EQD be based off actual spend?

Thanks!

I am looking at a MR to keep Plat pro. I find this on google flights and when I go to buy on AA>com it does not show EQM and EQD's

and if I go directly to AAcom to search it does not find these CX flights at all. Hoping the 20% will boost the EQD's any idea what the totals would be on this flights>?

That is correct for EQM, RDM, and EQD. If the flight is booked as the partner flight number, then you earn based on the partner earning chart at aa.com. Doesn't matter what the ticket stock is.

You will have to manually calculate your EQDs using the earning chart at aa.com and GCMapper. So go to Great Circle Mapper and plug in ORD-HKG-SYD-HKG-JFK, get the distance, and multiply that by .20 for your EQDs. Whatever the answer is, you'll earn a few more than that for the MCO-ORD and JFK-MCO legs on AA, but this will be based on a fare component and probably negligible in tha big picture.

That is quite a brutal and expensive MR, btw.
