Boeing 787-9 (789): Discussion of 787-9 AA as of 6 Oct 2016

22 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners were ordered in total by American Airlines.

Related threads:

Boeing 787-9 / 789: Best Business (B/E Super Diamond) Seat, Service (master thd)

Boeing 787-9 / 789: Coach, MCE & Premium Economy Seat, Service (master thd)

Retaining the wingspan of the 787-8, the 787-9 is a lengthened and strengthened variant with a 20 feet (6.1 m) longer fuselage and a 54,500 pounds (24,700 kg) higher maximum take-off weight (MTOW), seating 280 passengers in a typical three-class arrangement over a 7,635 nautical miles (8,786 mi; 14,140 km) range. Link to Wikipedia article.
Seating in the 787-9 "out of the box" will comprise
  1. 30 Business class seats

  2. 21 Premium Economy seats

  3. 234 economy seats (207 Main Cabin, 27 Main Cabin Extra)
...we learned that American would be installing the B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seat on their (~half the 772 fleet) 777-200, A350, and 787 aircraft going forward. These are the same types of business class seats as on Air Canada, China Airlines, Qatar Airways, Virgin Australia, etc. (EXCEPT the AA seats will not offer privacy dividers for the Center pair of seats) Link to One Mile at a Time article
B/E Aerospace will provide the Premium Economy seating (possibly a version of their Millennium seat); extendable leg and footrests for bulkhead seats, foot pegs for the rest.

AA will receive an additional 10 787-9s in 2017 and will receive the final 8 in 2018. AA has ordered a total of 22 787-9s to complement its 20 787-8s. These will have the General Electric GEnx-1B engines.

Its actually going to be a while before these aircraft really start to show up en masse as AA is taking its final three 787-8s in February and March. It won't be until next summer where they'll be plenty of these aircraft flying around the system.

Just stepped off GRU-LAX on AA216. Overall a decent flight. I've always appreciated the express/expedited service when leaving South America. They make a real effort to get drinks and meals out as quickly as possible so passengers have time to sleep. It's a bit rushed but I'm perfectly OK with that and prefer it to a long, drawn-out service.

I was surprised by the condition of the particular 789 I was on. I flew LAX-HND r/t earlier this year and the aircraft in both directions must have been fairly new as they were in great condition. This one overall still looked nice and the cabin was clean and tidy. I was in business and the back seat cushion had slumped off the frame to the point the metal frame was exposed to my shoulders. Several times in the night when I was sleeping I woke up with my shoulder on the frame vs the cushion. I also noted several other seats had the same situation.

Of the two covered side storage bins one was jammed closed (the smaller one), and the hinge was popped. I don't generally use those storage areas for fear of leaving things in them.

Overall decent flight but I do hope they have eventual plans for freshening up the cabin from time to time. The seats were looking a little worn.

If you flew 6 Sept on AA216, then yes, you were on AA's oldest 789: N820AL. She was delivered just over 2 years ago.

My guess is that she will go in for her first Heavy C check in the next couple of months.

That's the one! And this totally makes sense. I suggested they write up my seat (and the others) when we arrived in LAX and they promised it'd be done. I noticed it in GRU but wasn't about to mention it for fear it might cause a maintenance delay. Looks like it heads to PEK today.

Looks like AA175 (DFW-NRT) will break with a LONG history of 777-200ER service and go to a 787-9 on 19 Dec 2018. Back to a 772 on 14 Feb 2019.

I’m flying ORD-LHR on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Currently in seat 13L. 12D is also available and almost all of row 24. Thoughts on what’s best?

depends. Do you like window seats
and planning to sleep ? Than yeah 13L is fine.
12D is a good seat of you are short and don’t want to stretch your legs all the way.
row 24 has unlimited legroom but people congregate by the lavs

Thanks for the reply. I’ll stay away from 12D in that case.

I am planning to sleep. I do wonder on a flight that departs at 11:30PM it the lavatories would be busy or not since most people will be sleeping I assume. Will have to mull it over some more. Unlimited legroom would be nice. I’m 6’0 so legroom is nice but I’m thinking 13 probably has enough if I move my backpack out from under the seat.

the only lavs for economy are located at row 24. Regardless of what time it is people still be using it. And you can’t book window in row 24 - it’s blocked until departure for some reason.
13 has very good legroom - it’s MCE seat. I’m 6’1 and I can’t be comfortable in row 12 cuz of bulkhead. But I would still prefer it cuz I need direct direct aisle access and don’t like window seats on flights over 2 hours

I got upgraded to first/business. In seat 5L. Should I change to 6L? Seatguru says 5L is not the best, not sure how accurate that is... There are no window seats in front of row 5 still available. Will it be nosier from PE if I'm in 6 vs. 5?

it will not be nosier in row 6 at all. Row 5 has 1 window , all other rows have 2

787-9 dfw-sfo

So on my recent trip SFO-DFW, I got a pleasant surprise; I got a 787-9 on the return leg (AA1535).

Are there other domestic routes where this plane is used? Suffice to say, I will always try to fly 1535 home each time.

True - and the used to be a negative. IMHO it no longer matters much because except for takeoff and landing, I find the FAs tend to set them to full dark and lockout user control on the 78x planes. So nothing to see anyway,.

DFW-SFO, DFW-ORD, DFW-LAX, ORD-CUN mostly. Combination of 788 and 789. Schedule varies each month.

Just flew 787-9 in J for the first time, and something caught my eyes. This looks like emergency lighting or a camera to me. Does anybody know what this is?
