Boeing 787-9 (789): Discussion of 787-9 AA as of 6 Oct 2016

22 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners were ordered in total by American Airlines.

Boeing 787-9 / 789: Coach, MCE & Premium Economy Seat, Service (master thd)

Retaining the wingspan of the 787-8, the 787-9 is a lengthened and strengthened variant with a 20 feet (6.1 m) longer fuselage and a 54,500 pounds (24,700 kg) higher maximum take-off weight (MTOW), seating 280 passengers in a typical three-class arrangement over a 7,635 nautical miles (8,786 mi; 14,140 km) range. Link to Wikipedia article.
Seating in the 787-9 "out of the box" will comprise
  1. 30 Business class seats

  2. 21 Premium Economy seats

  3. 234 economy seats (207 Main Cabin, 27 Main Cabin Extra)
...we learned that American would be installing the B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seat on their (~half the 772 fleet) 777-200, A350, and 787 aircraft going forward. These are the same types of business class seats as on Air Canada, China Airlines, Qatar Airways, Virgin Australia, etc. (EXCEPT the AA seats will not offer privacy dividers for the Center pair of seats) Link to One Mile at a Time article
B/E Aerospace will provide the Premium Economy seating (possibly a version of their Millennium seat); extendable leg and footrests for bulkhead seats, foot pegs for the rest.

AA will receive an additional 10 787-9s in 2017 and will receive the final 8 in 2018. AA has ordered a total of 22 787-9s to complement its 20 787-8s. These will have the General Electric GEnx-1B engines.

Its actually going to be a while before these aircraft really start to show up en masse as AA is taking its final three 787-8s in February and March. It won't be until next summer where they'll be plenty of these aircraft flying around the system.

Yes, it's confirmed for one month this summer: ORD-CDG July 5 to August 5, 2017.

AA37 MAD-DFW on May 12th.
Again, ExpertFlyer is showing an equipment code of 787.

The only place you should be looking is the seat map results, as the schedule information (which is what the availability and Flight Details use) doesn't always get updated by the airlines when there is an equipment change. That's why the equipment change alert uses the seat map results.

I'm too. It *says* 787, but the seat map that's showing is the 789 version. ???

Apparently, we were all supposed to know all this already (that the seat map should be used to determine the exact equipment, -not- the listed equipment,) but speaking for myself, I sure didn't.

Hmm, interesting. I think I get how the aircraft listed in the Flight Availability Results comes from the schedule which could be outdated. But I guess they're saying that the aircraft type specified in the Seat Map Results can also be incorrect, and we need to go by what the actual seat map looks like?

In this specific case, the Flight Availability Results show 789, the seat map shows a 789 seat map, but the Seat Map Results *SAY* it's a "787" (thus 788, right?).

Weird!

If you look at FleyeSkyHigh's original post:

For: AA37
From: MAD to DFW
Date: 05/12/17
Aircraft: Boeing 787-9 (789)

New Aircraft: Boeing 787 (787)
This is the alert email ExpertFlyer sent, and what it's simply saying is that the equipment code (on the seat map) went from 789 to 787. That's what changed.

If it was just the layout of the seat map that changed, and not the equipment code, the "Aircraft" and "New Aircraft" lines would have the same code.

I just flew DFW - GRU on the 787-9 business class, this is my 6th time on this plane and noticed the business class seats are falling apart. 3 seats on this flight were out of service. The seat cushion on my seat was all funky... it was very uncomfortable.

Man, that's no good. I was on N825AA's 2nd INTL flight a month or so ago and the window dimming button on 7L had already been broken.

A few updates from the weekend. LAX-NRT will go 787-9 for August through the end of October. LAX-GRU goes to a 787-9 effective November 5. Still rather surprised this is all of the announced 787-9 routes as AA will have 13 787-9s by the end of November.

Look for the 789 to replace the 773 in SYD. And also 789 replacing the 788 to AKL.

The SYD change will come in November, the AKL change comes after an 8 week route hiatus ending in October.

The 789 will also be operating:

LAX - NRT
August - October

LAX- GRU
November - indefinite

I had initially though the switch to 789 for AKL wa sa sign of strength with the route-- I suppose? But, yeah: LAX-AKL suspended August-October.

I believe the route is doing well. Just not for those eight weeks.
