General Information
Despite it's size and five terminals, DFW is a fairly easy airport to navigate and connect though. If you have any difficulty, look around for kiosks / booths staffed by volunteer Ambassadors - they can usually be spotted wearing "ten gallon" cowboy hats. They offer maps and terminal guides (which include dining and shopping information).

Peculiarities: DFW can be severely affected by rare winter ice or snow, and summer thunderstorms. Lightning effectively shuts the flight line down. This is AA's prime hub; over 80% of aircraft movements here are AA, so knock-on effects during lengthy OSO / IROPS can manifest themselves systemwide.

Walking between terminals
- Terminals A-C and B-D (international) are connected at the ends by departures level walkways; the people mover belts on these walkways have been out of service at least for years. Estimate at least a five to ten minute walk between A and C, B and D, more if gates are farther from the connector.
- Terminals A and B are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts, all of which are out of service as of 7/18/19. Courtesy carts use this route by using lifts.
- Terminals C and D (international) are connected by overhead walkways (escalator or lift / elevator). This walkway is serviced by working people mover belts.

Q. If I am making an international to international connection, what is the process?
There is no international transit process in most U.S.A. airports, but (DFW and MIA have a ITI baggage exception for international to international if arriving from some "approved" international origins). Arriving internationally, unless you have been pre-cleared or are excused by meeting ITI requirements as described here, you must proceed through U. S. immigration (there are kiosks and a fast channel for Global Entry approved passengers, and a "green line" for those with no checked bags), recover your baggage from the baggage carousel and proceed through U. S. Customs. There is a "green line" shortcut for passengers traveling only with carry-on baggage (no checked luggage) and there are Global Entry kiosks and a short cut to Global Entry queues.
Upon exiting Customs there is a bag drop facility; drop your checked connecting baggage, exit to the landside arrivals area.
NOTE: if your connection exceeds 11 hours or entails remaining overnight, you will normally be required to take your baggage with you and re-check it within ~four hours of departure.
NOTE: Any liquids in excess of security allowance will have to either be packed in checked baggage or, in the case of duty free purchases at your origin (or in air from other airlines), presented in STEB (Secure, Tamper Evident Bags) with receipts to TSA
Proceed to the kiosks to get boarding passes for your ongoing travel, or check in and re-check your baggage, then proceed through TSA security to airside (see the "DFW Security" section). Your international departure will be from Terminal D, also your international arrival terminal.

Arriving Passengers: After collecting your baggage, follow the Rental Car signs to the designated pick-up area on the lower level of the terminal. From there, board the Rental Car shuttle bus. Buses run 24 hours a day, depart (theoretically) every five minutes and reach the Rental Car Center in approximately 10 minutes.

During Off Schedule Operations / Irregular Operations, cots with blankets and pillows are available for affected passengers.
During OSO / IROPS, AA will generally not offer hotel and meal vouchers for disruptions from causes not directly under the airline's control (such as weather). You may be able to at least get "distressed traveler" certificates for lower rates from AA, or you may be able to request distressed traveler rates from reservations center's or properties.

Thank you, I did see the links already. But I was not clear if passing through passport and customs leaves me outside security or not. The Skylink inside security is obviously quicker and preferable. Hopefully someone on here has done this transfer and has personal experience.

I had a very comfortable 5 hour connection in DFW on this routing:
AA MTY DFW 1315 1505
AA DFW MIA 2050 0047
AA MIA BON 1005 1315
I always build in buffers especially in these times when delays and cancellations are common. This was booked as a QF award ticket months ago. AA cancelled that 1315 departure and reaccommadated me on a very tight connection that doesn't seem possible in an airport the size of DFW and having to pass passport, customs and security between these flights. Even now, they are offering this route as a valid connection.
AA MTY DFW 1629 1915
AA DFW MIA 2035 0029 (slight time change from before, not in my favour)
How is this even possible? 1 hour 20 minutes to make that connection?
I tried with QF to change the first segment to a flight leaving 6 hours earlier from MTY but they can't reissue the ticket because of "married segments". They can't swap just the first segment for another one and leave the other segments intact. And there is no more availability MIA BON so I can't cancel and rebook the whole thing from scratch.
What alternatives do I have? If I do the online check in for the ticketed flights and go to MTY can I stand by for an earlier flight? Would the flight be under airport control so they have more authority?
It is in AA's best interests that I make all these connections. If that 1629 flight is delayed, there is no way to make the MIA flight.

If you haven’t already accepted the changes then I’d try and call again. When there’s a cancellation, you are able to choose a suitable (suitable to you) itinerary. You have a lot of flexibility here and it doesn’t even need to be the same routing. There is a direct MTY-MIA some days for example. Not sure what the nonsense is about married segments as I don’t see the relevance here. Never had that in years of cancellations and rebooking.
No award availability on MTY-MIA. The problem is caused by AA changing a flight and unilaterally rebooking me on a tight connection. And QF doesn't seem able to change only one segment, they even got some kind of ticketing team involved and they couldn't do it. It won't let them cancel the unwanted flight only. It's all or nothing.

You will be outside security after you go through immigration. There is a security checkpoint right above the exit from customs. If that one is backed up, then I always walk to the left past the elevators to the Hyatt to the next security checkpoint because it tends to have less lines and let's you out close to the escalators for the SkyLink.
I think the problem for the OP is that he is booked through QF, not AA. If he were booked directly with AA, then there wouldn't be any need to rely on award availability, etc. He could just be rebooked on any flight. But the has to deal with QF who does have to rely on award availability with AA, unless they can get AA to open up availability for him. OP I think what you have for now is okay. Keep looking though to see if availability opens up on the flights you want if it would make you feel less uneasy.
And the MIA-BON flight is no longer available at least on QF. So I ended up being forced to accept the unwanted changes or lose the whole thing and cash fares are well over $1000.

After claiming bags in whatever terminal you arrive, you'll exit the building and follow the signs for the terminal link shuttle. Let the drive know you're going to the Grand Hyatt and he'll let you know which stop to get off at.

(In flight now) - short connection at DFW due to delay
Currently in flight and will and will have a 29 min layovr in DFW. Hoping we can hustle and make it, traveling HBO. Tips for going from A to B concourse fastest? Sky train or walking? Also, will they keep our seats until boarding door closes?

29 minutes seems like enough time. If you are from high A gate (A30 or higher) to low B gates (B8 or lower), I would recommend walking, otherwise take the OUTSIDE (relative to the terminal) train from A to B.
If you are walking, there is a large set of escalators just past gate A39 on your right go up these, use the moving walkways to go over to terminal B, then a set of down escalators drops you at gate B4. For all gates other than gates B1- B3 you would just keep walking forward when exiting the escalator.
Note if you are in gates B30-B39, these are in a little "stinger" concourse that sticks out between Gates B29 & B40, look for the sign these leads to these gates.
Should be less than 15 minutes from gate to gate, maybe even closer to 10 depending on your gates. They should keep your seats until 15 minutes before departure, but will sometimes hold a little longer than that if they know folks are on a tight connection.

Agree that 29 minutes should be fine. UA starts unloading seats at T minus 15, maybe AA is different.
