The list of all FSS locations is in the Wikipost; those where carts are definitely not available (JFK, LAX) are indicated.

Any member with 90 posts and 90 days can update the Wikipost and add airport's where carts are not available.

Is this service still offered gratis for those flying in F on AA 73 LAX to SYD? If so, do I need to call and request it? It would be nice to be met at the American Eagle terminal and expedited.

Tight connection at LAX - should I pay for Five Star Service?

In May, I have a connection that I would not usually purchase. There were a number of reasons why this flight had to be the only choice. I'm just concerned about making it.

I'll arrive at the Eagle's Nest on a Compass flight from Tucson at 6:55 pm
I depart at 7:44 pm on AA 136 to Heathrow. As of today, that flight is out of Terminal 4 (48B)

I'm sitting in the front row, and can theoretically make it to the bus to terminal 4 within about 15 minutes, but I am a bit worried.

I only have Gold status on AA, not Concierge Key or anything that might entitle me to special attention.
Do you think I should bother with the $250 for a 5-Star escort (that would mean a car right to Terminal 4), or do you think it will be okay on my own.
$250 is a steep cost to pay, but I'm willing to do it if you think it would help ensure the connection.

The only later flight is at 9:35 pm on BA, but I do not think that American would endorse an AAdvantage Award ticket to another carrier, even if its a codeshare.

I would never dream of booking something so tight at LAX, but--well--things happen.

Thanks for your advice!

That's literally minutes of within an illegal MCT. Experience from 'nest to T4 from timing perspective sporadic. Even with CK or 5 star, that's still very tight. Doors close 10 minutes before, so AA136 closes at 7.34pm. I'd go with 5* and be very specific about your flights when reserving that service. Note that flights that arrive into the 'nest are often plagued with "awaiting a free gate" issue, so that should be factored in, but regardless, there is no buffer here !

Please do report back when the time comes. Let us know how things went.

Counting on good timing when the Eagle's Nest is involved is generally a bad bet to make.

If this is within minutes of an illegal MCT, maybe I'd call AA and see if they'd rebook you on an earlier TUS-LAX flight for free? They might be able to rebook you for free if they see you're very close to being an illegal MCT. That is, if you're flexible in taking an earlier flight.

Based on the OP's post, it sounds like this flight combination was the only one that worked and taking an earlier TUS-LAX wasn't an option.

I'd check flight aware or flight stats to see if Tucson to Lax is usually on time. I used to fly out/in to SBA a lot, and it was always a 45 min connection from eagles to mainline at lax. I never missed a connection unless the flight I was connecting from was seriously delayed. My experience was that Eagle padded the schedule by a good 20 mins so a minor delay didn't screw things up.

Yeah, but if he is able to get a free change then perhaps he can rearrange his plans at TUS if it works better? Just an idea @:-)

I fly LAX-LHR every year for the past 20+ years. With the expansion of AA into TBIT and T5 in the past couple of years, I have been watching the departure gate a few weeks ahead of my flight just to get an idea of what to expect.

Sorry to tell you, there are no expectations. The flight can leave out of T4 one day and TBIT the next, then T4 a couple of days, then back to TBIT for a few more days. If your flight that day leaves out of TBIT, that's another good long walk past T4.

I understand you would never make such a tight connection, but in this case you had no choice. As far as I can see it, you have three options:

The most risky: Go with your plan and hope for the best. You seriously risk missing the LHR flight.

The medium risky: Pay for the Five Star Service, making sure they know of your tight connection and they can guarantee a car transfer at LAX. That does nothing to help you if the incoming flight is late.

The least risky: See if you can do anything to re-arrange your personal life so you can take an earlier flight to LAX.

One thing you can do in advance is study the LAX map, so you know exactly where gates are and can make a beeline to your departure gate without hesitation.

AA and BA have a revenue-neutral joint venture. If you misconnect in LAX, I would expect AA to put you on the BA flight if there are any seats available (not just award seats). I would not expect them to move you to that flight in advance, however; only if you misconnect (or on the day of travel if your TUS-LAX is showing a delay which would cause you to miss your connection). Does any experience contradict this expectation?

AA 6037 (the evening TUS-LAX) does show 85% on time (the DOT 15 minute definition of on time), for what it's worth.

That connection is theoretically doable, but bear in mind that AA requires international departure passengers to be at the gate no later than T-30 (T-10 is simply when the cabin door is closed). If the onward flight is overbooked and still oversold at T-30, OP will be bumped at 7:14 PM. His connection is at risk at that point. There is a later BA service, arriving at LHR at 4:05 PM, thus 1:40 later and AA will rebook OP if he misconnects. But, that is space available and if OP is in Y, this will be a lousy middle seat for a 10-1/2 hour flight.

Given that OP has an inflexible schedule, there really isn't much to be done other than perhaps travel with a small carry-on which he won't have to gate check and thus not have to wait around for valet luggage.

If OP could possibly depart TUS 20 minutes earlier, he could have a 1:34 connection at PHX and be in LHR at roughly the same time (BA nonstop xPHX). I would make those arrangements now as the rebooking situation may be grim on the day of travel and OP is already willing to spend $250 for 5* service.

This all comes down to risk tolerance. What are the consequences of an earlier departure from TUS or a later (perhaps next day) arrival into LON?

AA 6037 is an E75 (at least currently), so rollaboards can go on board and there's no valet checking. But I would be sure to be on board as early as possible in TUS to ensure that OP gets overhead bin space, which can be tight on E75s.

In the situation, assuming that a change on the TUS-LAX isn't possible, then adding the 5* wouldn't be a bad option.

I wouldn't expect them to hold the plane if seriously delayed coming from TUS, but if you were 5 min behind then possibly a good chance. Not to mention that they do require you to be checked-in by T-30, however being taken care of under the 5* program could possibly meet that requirement.

On the chance that you indeed don't make the connection, I would expect that having paid for the service then you would be more easily accommodated on the next available departure.

Since the flight isn't until May, I would hold off on 5 Star as there could always be a schedule change before then that would change the length of the connection.
