AAdvantage Aviator Silver and Red Cards from BarclayCard
There are five AAdvantage-linked Aviator-branded cards by Barclaycard. Two of them can be applied for directly, the other three are upgrades or downgrades after receiving a Red card. The Many Flavors of Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator
Where can I see information on all available Barclays Barclaycard AAdvantage cards?
Aviator Red (On AA.com)
Aviator Silver (On AA.com)
Aviator Business (On AA.com)
Red cardholders may receive an offer to upgrade to Aviator Silver after a period of time that varies, usually 3-11 months. The offer appears in the online "Offers" section, if it is declined there may be no simple way to receive the upgrade. Be careful with your clicking! Silver benefits begin at the start of the next statement, but the increased annual fee won't hit until the next card-member year starts.

This just happened to me also. It's not limited to automatic payments. I made a manual $5K payment Saturday and it's been taken twice from my account.
I'm calling Barclays now to inquire how and when they intend to rectify this. They haven't reached out to contact me or posted any notices on their site. I would be very leery of stopping the payment at your bank when it comes to Barclays. Barclays has security algorithms tied to stopped payments and other account issues. I once made a mistake and linked a payment to the wrong account. It was a good six months before my payments began clearing in a day again, instead of 3-4 days. Barclays stated this was beyond their control and controlled by the algorithms. (Not that I believe this, but it's what they stated. If however that's accurate to any extent, I doubt their systems will make a distinction for a stop payment initiated by the customer, whether it's Barclays fault or not.)

I have the luxury to be able to do that. But I feel for the people who will be much more impacted by this. Especially at the beginning of the month, families making rent payments, etc. Not a good situation.
Also talked to Barclays. The agent said they've been getting calls all morning. There was an error in their algorithm that somehow took all payments out twice that were made on the 1st or 2nd.

Barclays told me to stop payment, if you have the $5k to float for a few days on your payment, then it may be best to let it play out, my payment was over $9k, if it had only been $5k I'd not have an issue, at $9k+ I simply don't keep that much cash sitting around my very low interest savings and checking accounts at my primary bank, I'm a few thousand negative, which really makes me uncomfortable.
Edited to add: Actually, when I first called Barclays they told me there was no problem on their end, must be my bank, so I called my bank and at that point stopped payment. My bank says it will bounce anyway if the payment doesn't get stopped. When I called Barclays again, as a courtesy I was going to tell them I stopped payment on the payment they had told me 30 minutes earlier wasn't their fault, they said it was their fault, they were working on it, and told me to stop it if I could, which I told them is what I had already done.

Beckles, thanks for giving the forum the heads up on this issue. Your post helped me out substantially this morning.
I suspect unfortunately there will be a good number of people who will have no idea this is happening, go about their business without checking on account balances, & will have to deal with a significant amount of cleanup and aftermath. Even once the funds & fees are restored. In my younger years - or even in the right situation now - this could have been a catastrophic mess.

This also happened to me. I ended up calling Barclays, they suggested a 3-way with my bank and they requested my bank process a stop payment for the 2nd pending ACH transfer. I just checked my checking account and Barclays has now also direct deposited the amount of the second ACH debit, so if the stop payment goes through successfully, essentially they have credited back my initial (correct) payment. What a mess.

I called Barclays earlier today and the CSR was clueless. Initially, she denied that there was a double payment, since it wasn't reflected in their system, but eventually she advised me to stop payment on the pending ACH hold and that they would reimburse me for any fees.
I decided to let it play out, as I have a comfortable cushion in my checking account balance.
A few minutes ago, I received a notification from my bank of a direct deposit from "Barclaycard US reversal" in the amount of the duplicate payment.

This is what I'm wondering too. I'm just going to wait until the dust settles for a week or so and see how/if they do anything. If not, I'll call them to try to make a honest effort to correct it so it doesn't come back to bite me.

newbie to aviators here - citi cardholder and didnt' travel at all during pandemic until recently. Should I switch to Aviators for the 50k bonus? Are there any additional benefits (or disadvantages?) I used to cycle through AA and United cards whenever I could get the 50K bonus. If I go aviators, I would cancel my Citi card,

If they're still doing the 50k mile bonus w/the first year fee waived, then that's a pretty good deal, imo. But if so, after the first year you can either pay the fee or downgrade the card.
FWIW, this time, they did waive the fee on year two, so that helped. Never hurts to ask. Seems like many card companies are less inclined to waive the annual fee these days once the promotional period is over.

It's only $9k for me, that's like a rounding error for a big bank like Barclay's, they probably won't even notice.

Here's a message Barclay's sent me about this mess:
If you got charged fees from your bank because of their error, they expect you to work that out with the bank, which is contrary to what their customer service rep told me on Tuesday.
Those cardmembers that may have incurred overpayment or related fees from their external bank or other institutes due to this issue, the fees must be handled by the external bank and or institute, in accordance with their standard operational rules and regulations.

It did for me pre-pandemic on a couple of occasions. I imagine it's limited per day -- so if both you and the AU happened to be flying the same day it would still be $25 total cap on in-flight spending.
