AA (legacy US Airways) Airbus A321-200 "321"

The older legacy US Airways Airbus A321-200 is shown as "321" in AA schedules. (Newer legacy AA A321s are listed as "32B" as they have "Sharklet" wingtip devices installed, and include two class A321S and A321H ETOPS and three class A321T transcontinental versions.)

NOTE: in accordance with AA “Project Oasis” all A321-200s will be retrofitted between 2019 and 2021. Business / First cabins will use the seats found today in the AA A319, with reduced seat pitch and recline. MCE and MC will have the Rockwell Collins slimline Meridian seats with reduced pitch and recline. Lavatories will be ultra-slim Rockwell Collins Spacewall lavs. See Oasis: New seats & less pitch, WiFi IFE & power all 737 and A321 2019-21 for further information.

As conversion begins we will start a new thread, and you should be able to see which configuration a particular aircraft has by referencing the (unofficial) American Airlines Fleet Site here.

The legacy US Airways A321s are currently unmodified, though a few have been reupholstered, have new carpeting and bulkhead liners. These have less seat pitch and recline in the First cabin, no Main Cabin Extra seats other than the few with greater seat pitch (e.g. bulkhead / 5, Exit rows 9, 10, 22, and 23) and have neither seatback IFE nor at seat power provisions. They do have GoGo WiFi and free streaming audio and video entertainment for your WiFi capable devices..

Note 10 ABC (fixed armrests with deploying trays) or F, 23 A and F seem to be preferred by some members.

Please see AA to install same new seats in 737-800s and A321s but add more of them for information on the plan to install new B/E Aerospace Meridian slimline seats in a denser pattern and 30" seat pitch in Main Cabin in 2019. (We will dedicate a thread to the CIP / modified A321 when that aircraft becomes current with the AA fleet.)

The A320-321 refurbishment thread may be read here.

Upcoming 321 red-eye! Definitely want to try to get some sleep

Row 25 is the one with good legroom on my flight available. Both 25A and 25F are available right now! Neither has seat in front. Which would you recommend is quieter or better to sleep? 25F is maybe farther from the bathroom but might be closer to people congreagting for bathroom?

That’s LAA A321. But both seats are fine imo.

LAA 321 25F / LUS 321 23F is my favorite coach seat. You still have storage under the seat 2 rows ahead, whereas the A side is a bulkhead.

I'm looking at a PHX-PHL redeye on an A321. As best I can tell (limited to Seatguru and knowing this is LUS hub-to-hub), I shouldn't expect power, even in F. Am I reading correctly that AA.com would list "32B" and not "321-Airbus" if it had power? If that isn't the best way, should I do a dummy booking to see what MCE is on offer as a guide to which aircraft?

Yes, this is correct. You can also tell by the flight # - the LUS aircraft are flights 400-889 and 1650-2174

10D, 23BCDE shows starred for elite members.
So those super legroom window seats are now up for grabs for low cost to anyone w/o status. Why take it off MCE? So much more legroom that row 5!
I saw it suggested that it was awkward for them to have different seats in the same row classified differently. 23A/F are still extreme legroom seats and still my first choice as I take these birds frequently.

Question AA SEA-PHL - domestic F seats on the A321

Apologies if this has been debated here before - just a bit confused by my experience on AA....

Took the overnight flight AA767 SEA-PHL last week. I usually pay for domestic F when I travel within the US - obviously mainly pay for the seat. Thought USD670 one way was a pretty decent deal. However, the seat recline on the A321 was minimal and managed to sleep for perhaps 30min on that flight. Normally I'm able to sleep in domestic F reasonably ok. Now, are the F seats on the AA A321s pretty much the worst in the industry?

I think the last time I flew on AA domestic F (MD-80 and regional a/c) was summer of 2016, so not particularly familiar with the product.

I have paid for domestic F on UA, DL, B6 (mint though), AS, SY over the past years - so would like to think that I more or less know what to expect. Perhaps not?

There are ex-US A321s, ex-AA A321s, and ex-AA A321s with a 3-cabin layout.

Do not expect seat commonality across the AA fleet. With 950+ mainline aircraft ranging from brand-new to 30+ years old and refurb/seat 'densification' projects ongoing, it just can't happen.

Sounds about right. The first row of MCE and First, no real difference in seat recline. Basically, you get a slightly wider seat and sometimes free food.....other than that you don’t get crap from AA. You used to get priority check in but their major hubs are beginning to shut those counters down at 6pm.

When at all possible, stick with B6 and Mint.

Cheers,
TG

The 320 and 321 are old US birds. When you book they are 320 and 321 (vs 32B for the Legacy AA ones).

minimal pitch, minimal recline, no IFE, no power. They are awful.

I flew US DCA-PHL/CLT-SEA weekly for eight years and never had a problem with any of the F seats on the US Airbus fleet. IMHO, the seats US had were far more comfortable than the new ones AA now uses on its domestic planes, which always give me a backache on longer flights.

And, many of the US A321s are not that old. The last one was delivered June 2015, less than three years ago.

In the long haul it won’t matter much. All A321 and B737 series will have the A319 F seats with reduced pitch of 37”, receded recline from 6” to 4”if I recall. Main Cabin will have the Meridian seats with MCE reduced to 33”, MC to 30”, with the new slimline stress position “microlavs” It’s called “Project Oasis”, because it’ll look like a desert back there, given WN has the Meridian seat rolling out in their 737 MAX 8s with 32”pitch.

Oasis: New seats & less pitch, WiFi IFE & power all 737 and A321 2019-21

Its all an an utter joke. I really, really look forward to watching this companies struggle again. Honestly, who on earth would pay for domestic first. Hell, after a decade of EXP, I have had three trips to Asia already this year and won’t even qualify for Gold this year because of how little business was I’m giving to AA. Got to give me something for my money.

Cheers,
TG
