AA Boeing 737-823 / "738" with in-seat AVOD
Audio-Video On Demand in seat back, new slimline seats inaugurated 13 Dec 2013

  • As of 15FEB17, 66 738s (22.3% out of the fleet of 287) are equipped with in-seat AVOD. N314PD
  • They also have new slimline seats in economy, which are reported to be a touch more comfortable than older 738s but with less foot space
  • All new 737s on order will have this configuration
  • "Really big boxes" are present under some seats and limit the space for bags and the legroom:
    • In business (first) class they are under the B and E seats; pictures here
    • In economy class they are under the A, C, D and F seats; C and D seats are more restricted
  • Occasional difficulties occur; holding down the POWER button ten seconds reboots your IFE system (thanks JMN57)
  • These aircraft are not dedicated and are assigned to any route, so you cannot find out whether you will fly on one of these when you're booking (or, really, until you're at the gate)
  • The registration number of these aircraft is N939NN and above (note: the -AN excluded)
  • If you're interested, you can find the registration number of the aircraft assigned (but subject to change) to a flight from about ~24 hours before its departure at www.flightstats.com, in the "Event Timeline" tab (look for "TAIL" events)

New LAA 738 with audio video on demand / AVOD began flying 18 Dec 2013

The first 3 738's with AVOD went in to service yesterday and today (frames 940, 941, and 942).

Any reports on these planes? Is the AVOD exactly like what is in the A319? Anything else new worthwhile to report??

are they doing random flying around the system or being dedicated to longer transcon missions?

I presume random. AA does not dedicate subfleets, with the exception of some 757s that can't do overwater and some who can't do high-altitude/high-performance needed missions (to a handful of S. America airports and EGE).

Related question. Will other 738's be retrofitted?

What, do you think you're flying VX?

Of course not on AA!

I'm assuming they have the same new slimline seats as the A319, so with that in mind, is the seating configuration the same as the existing 738 fleet?

Don't know about the seats but the seatmap for N941NN is a 737/92 and is identical to the one at http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Ame...00_MCE_new.php , which I assume it's the same as the old one.

Why are people excited about AVOD? The content is usually terrible anyways. Pull that junk out, like US Airways did, and give us some more comfortable seats.

I'm with you. The only thing that might interest me is DirecTV (primarily for live sporting events).

I think it would be nice if they just added more content to GoGo's streaming service. Cost would have to be much lower, no silly boxes under seats, etc. JetBlue's DirecTV is OK, but I hardly watch TV. I like the WiFi and am more than willing to pay for it (though I do think it'd be a nice perk for Elite members).

Anyhow, in this day and age, I just can't see the value in spending hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars putting in AVOD systems.

If I am not mistaken, the content streams wireless from a server on the plane, so no boxes. It's a very lightweight system, and a revenue generator through selling for access and ads.
