Covid-19 Update:
  • Sapphire+ status pax are temporarily allowed to use the Al Mourjan Business Lounge
  • Only tickets issued on QR 157 stock are eligible for the Extending Our Commitment (EOC) rebooking policy

and

AA oneworld and Other Airline Partner Award information, rules (2015 on)

N.B. Upgrades on QR book into fares not granted EQD/EQM by AA. If you're upgraded on QR, be prepared for pushback from some AA agents. You may have to submit a formal request with accompanying documentation reflecting you purchased an eligible fare class.

NOTE:AA has removed most EY and QR award access from aa.com due to a glitch booking these:

Bottom Line

For the time being you’ll have to call American if you want to ticket AAdvantage awards on Etihad & Qatar that aren’t for travel to & from the US or Canada. It makes sense that American took these awards “offline,” and now it also makes sense why so many passengers have been having issues with checked bags on awards.
If you experience difficulties with the AA reservations system, you may be able to book by calling AA Australia (+61 2-9101-1948 ) then press 4 - or the New Zealand number (+64 09-308-4014) as an alternative - although the call center is actually in Suva, Fiji (South African agency Mindpearl) - as they can often see the inventory more reliably, and you can book.

NOTE: USA Canada travel on QR will earn EQ miles etc. in accordance with the fare class purchased.

Links:

AA miles earning on QR changed 1 May 2016 (Link):

Minimum miles guarantee applies.

Checking QR award availability:

You can check QR availability on AA's site, BA's site, QF's site, www.awardnexus.com (which pulls from BA and/or QF), or the KVS tool. (A certain number of searches are free to FlyerTalk members at AwardNexus; click the "more signup options" link under the green Purchase button to sign up as a FlyerTalk member.)

When checking QR award availability, you have to check each segment individually. Both BA and QF can generate very misleading information if you try to check QR award availability all the way through [xxx-(DOH)-yyy] in one step. Be aware AA can only book 330 days out, even if you see availability farther out.

Awards on QR may not be visible to AA agents if a multi-segment itinerary is requested; broken into individual segments will generally reveal availability, however.

As well, AA Australia or New Zealand (actually MindPearl in Fiji) can often see and book AA awards on QR US-based ones might not be able to.

From danger: For AA awards, Economy is X, Business is U, First is Z. NOTE: Those with Z (First) awards may see "Z (Business Class)" shown on the QR website; this is a known glitch.

As well, QR sells intra gulf two class service as First and Economy, as AA does domestically. This can cause some issues with a Business flight including a Gulf "First" flight potentially incurring an F award redemption.

From hotelmotel: "Got my QR PNR from AA. Popped over to QR and selected seats." (AAdvantage award.)

Days of the week: To/from the USA, especially in business class, Qatar often only offers awards seats for Mon..Thu departures, not Fri..Sun departures. So makes sure you check different parts of the week, and not just always weekends (if you're not finding anything on weekends).

NOTE: At DOH / Hamad International Airport, lounges as follows:

Qatar Airways Al Safwa First Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying First Class on Qatar or oneworld airlines and QRPC Platniums flying in ticketed Business (not oneworld Emeralds flying other lower classes of service)

Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying Business Class on Qatar or oneworld (not oneworld Sapphire flying lower classes of service)

Oryx Lounge: Third party lounge.

Qatar Airways HIA First Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First Class ticketed customers, Emerald members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Qatar Airways HIA Business Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First and Business Class ticketed customers, Emerald and Sapphire members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Arrivals Lounges (not oneworld lounges): only accessible to those arriving in First or Business Class on Qatar Airways (not oneworld Sapphire flying other oneworld airlines or other classes of service)

See FT: QR Lounges at HIA

Selecting Qatar Airways Seats
If you want to assign a seat after booking an award, you should first try the Qatar website or app. If you experience issues, please try a partner site like Royal Jordanian, Malaysia Airlines, or Sri-Lankan. You can also reach out to the QR Twitter team to fix your record in order to be able to select seats on their own site.

Thanks, I appreciate your input! I also am trying to get to Singapore Via Doha next January and am running into that same 330 day window issue that you are. Between Qantas, BA, and American it's becoming a handful keeping track of whats open and not open. Thanks again and good luck

You are aware you cant go to US>DOH>SIN on a single award? You have to go to SIN in the other direction. If you go through DOH you'll be paying for two award tickets. So if you go that route, you have to search separately for each award. I don't know if you have the points and unrelated to QR, but I got to SIN biz class using Delta points going BOS>JFK>CAN>SIN on China Southern

We have a Stock pile of Alaska miles to use for Cathay one way and American miles for return, Hoping to try out the new Q-suites. Qanta's and BA show availability from Singapore to US, but american only shows Cathay. Would i need to call in and book it or are you saying I can't transit through middle east at all (SIN>DOH>US)?

You cant transit thru the middle east from SIN to the US on one award ticket. You'd have to do it with two awards, SIN-DOH then DOH-US.
Scroll down to third region transit on this page to learn more about what's allowed

I have a question: I have two award tickets (all in economy) on hold that expire in couple of days. These are for 3 from DFW-DOH-MAA in Nov 2020 and for 4 from HYD-DOH-DFW in Dec 2020. These are on hold in separate itineraries. I just checked for the same trips I don't see any more availability on same route through Qatar (looking for 1-stop only, not BA for their surcharges). If I cancel these trips that are on hold will the award space be available immediately for booking ? I want to cancel the existing hold and rebook the same, can I? I know i'm going to buy the tickets but I want to hold for few more days while I finalize my dates. TIA.

My understanding is that the best answer is "maybe yes, maybe no"

they will be auto cancel after 5 days of hold anyway

if you repeatedly hold and never book, and have a habit of demonstrating that trend, AA doesnt look kindly to that.

you can change trip dates after booking, within limits, and without penalty

Problem with accessing an AAdvantage/QR award on QR website

I booked an AAdvantage award on QR metal, got AA to give me the QR PNR, and went to QR website to manage the booking. Should be easy; I have done that many times in the past. Except: It is not working this time.

What I get at QR website is a window asking for my contact details: email, country, phone. And then I get the following. Both AA and QR can see the details in my booking just fine and find no problem. A QR agent said this may be because I booked via AA, but I have that many times without problem.

Any ideas? Better yet, have you encountered this?

Yes , I have encountered that error - I can't remember the precist details, but seem to recall that it was something like the FF number being in the wrong field and then failing when trying to access

My recollection is that getting QR to remove all references to FF number in booking fixed it

It wasn't a major issue though - for selecting seats, just did it over the phone

I've been affected by this issue too. Somehow the award puts two AAdvantage numbers into the booking. As a result, the QR form validation freaks out whenever you want to make updates. If you only want to update your seats, head over to the Royal Jordanian site and pop in your QR PNR there. You'll be in and out before you know it. It's much easier and faster than calling the QR phone line for support

DC to Lebanon.
Searching IAD-DOH, as well as routes through BOS, NYC, PHL, ORD, YUL, ATL... Been trying to find something for about 3-4 months, I check every week.... The annoying thing is pretty soon I need to give up and confirm an alternative plan, but I will just kick myself if I miss out on Q suites availability that opens up later!!

There was a recent post in the Mileage Run forum of an LAX-DOH-DPS fare on QR in business (QSuites) for $2200. It wouldn't surprise me if they are holding off on award seats while that works through.

I'm guessing we should book our QR trips while we can because we'll have to compete with AS members for space soon?!

AS full membership will not start for another year, and it should not be a major expansion of OW. However sitting too long on a pile of AA miles is risky for other reasons. Just check out this thread for an incentive.
