Using multiple forms of payment at aa.com?
So, I'm trying to use a new citibank card for the promotional miles and $50 credit (spend $2000 in first 4 months and make one American Airlines purchase) but it has a $1000 limit.
I'll be soon purchasing three fares from American Airlines but all will be over $1000 each. AA.com states that only one credit card can be used for a purchase. I'm looking for ideas on how to use this card to purchase fares in excess of $1,000. Could I purchase an American gift card with a different credit card and pay the balance owed with this new card? Any other options?
Thanks

One thing you could do is transfer money to the card so that you have a negative balance. Be sure to call the credit card company to be sure this is allowed on your card.

If it is permitted on that card; transfer enough funds onto the card to be able to cover the cost of the flights. e.g. with a $1000 limit : if flights will costs $1050 each , so a total of $3150 , transfer $2200 onto the card beforehand which may allow you to make the purchase
Phone the card company 1st since this will not work on all cards; regardless of a credit balance ,some cards will still not allow a purchase for more than the credit limit amount on the card ( i.e $1000 in your case )
If the above cannot be used, then may be able to split payment over 2 cards over the phone with AA
Failing that, try booking with a travel agent that will allow splitting across cards

Yes, a $1000 limit. I called citi and discussed how this really limits the ability to use the card and potentially excludes some of the bonuses advertised (40,000 with the first $2,000 and 5,000 every $7,500 the first year). I did ask about "preloading" it but was told it still has a $1,000 spend limit per cycle regardless of the balance credit.
Maybe I'll try using 2 credit cards via phone as I'll need to process EVIPs anyway. I was hoping to get the $2000 in by ticket purchase but I'll be buying all 3 in the same billing cycle.

we did a prepay on the citi card which is auto charged for a # of bills....we were going to be gone 2.5 mo's....had to mail a check....it worked well, but when we go back, a check was there from citi for the credit balance on the last statement....turns out, the new law says that 3 months minus balance in a row requires that the balance be refunded....
ot, the credit did cover the charges....its now on auto draft from checking acct...also, a credit balance doesn't increase the credit limit....

I ran into this about 3 yrs. ago, needed to put a certain amount on my work card and the balance on my personal card. Neither the EXP desk or Web Services could do it...both said it was only possible at the airport. Luckily that was back in the day when you could call any AC directly, so I called the RDU club and they were able to do it.
I'd do as you mentioned above, buy some AA gift cards with your other credit cards to pay the remaining balances over what you can buy with your Citi card.

Does anyone know if this is possible at this point? I am trying to split a ticket between my corporate and personal credit cards. I have thought about buying a virtual gift card but the website indicates that 72 hours are needed to process, and I'm afraid the fare will be gone in that time. Is there another easy way to do this that I haven't thought of?

The only other option in this case is the TA processes the CC(s) through his own terminal and incurs CC fees normally paid by the airline and issues using FOP Cash/Check.

Any recent info on this? Can it be done at the airport as someone mentioned above? I need to split a payment between a corporate and personal CC and I need the charges to come directly from AA as a ticket charge (vs a gift card purchase or different travel agent). Thanks!
