Air Tahiti Nui (TN) is a non-oneworld airline partner of AA. AAdvantage members may use AA miles for awards on TN; members earn miles on TN only if flying TN as an AA marketed / codeshare. AA and TN have expanded codesharing to include CDG, AKL. It is also possible to earn AA miles flying as a Qantas codeshare due to an exclusion from the normal oneworld rule of earning on a oneworld codeshare only if operated by another oneworld airline.
You can now search for TN award availability on aa.com. But you may have to call AA due to some aa.com anomalous behavior. You may also use tools such as ExpertFlyer to find availability, or use Qantas as described in The High Life here.
NOTE: Air Tahiti Nui is “skipping” the USA with the exception of 4-5 flights weekly as of mid-March 2020 and initially through 7 April due to the novel Coronavirus and flying PPT-CDG without stopping at LAX. Link to TN travel policy page.

First, the basics. The should search for available inventory with the following criteria:
Promo Box- leave empty
Carrier Code Box- TN
Inventory Box- ADV
That's pretty much true for all award searches so if the rep didn't know how to find the carrier code of TN your best bet is going to be to HUCA. Assuming you get that far the next gotcha is the way the type of award code that is used. Often times the agent will simply search for a American or OneWorld award code. That will not work. They need to search using an "AP" award code which basically means "Another Partner Award Code."
...Air Tahiti Nui decided to change their business class award booking codes from I to F back in July of 2017. Much of AA's documentation has not been updated. I think they may have changed the letter codes of Economy awards also...they now come from bucket code U. It's helpful to remind the AA agents of the inventory code you are looking to book. I can tell you they are searching for I or U for business or X or T for economy they have not got the right "AP" award code for the search.
Lastly, I have found it helpful to ask them to go to their other screen and try a "direct access" search for the F or U award inventory directly with TN. This last step in my experience has set off the light bulb for most agents to get it done. I used to have a 10% success rate booking TN awards with AA but once I followed all the steps about I am at 80% plus (meaning I only have to HUCA 1 out of every 5 times).

Since TN introduced 'seat à la carte' on 1 Sept 2019, you can do seat selection online under the condition your booking was ticketed. You need the TN reservation code (PNR):
- Go to manage booking, enter your details (PNR - last name), open reservation

The only practical way for tourists, yes, which is why Air Tahiti can charge a hefty premium for their services. If you have Chase UR or Amex MR you can potentially book through their portals and "redeem points" that way, at least saves some cash out of pocket.

Well assuming you're using AA miles, why not just try to put the flight on hold at aa.com and see what happens?? If it works then great, if not then aa.com was just showing phantom space...

The most affordable way to visit several islands is with an Air Tahiti Pass. These passes connect islands of the same archipelago, or two different archipelagos, while extensions to the far-flung Marquesas and Austral islands can be added on to the other passes. The cheapest is the Discovery Pass, connecting Moorea with Huahine and Raiatea, but many other combinations are available. Those purchasing a pass must complete their travel within 28 days and only visit each island once; however, not all islands have to be visited. Passes offer good value when compared with multiple point-to-point air tickets.
Bora Bora is a high end destination with spread out resorts, lots of beauty and high prices.
Many miss Raiatea and Tahaa, lovely islands with fewer tourists. And for divers, the Tuamotu archipelago, particularly Fakarava and Rangiroa, offer spectacular adrenaline pass dives with zippy currents and big critters.
Farther afield, the Marquesas and the Austral archipelagos await.

Hi all I have a few questions. I'm flying LAX > CDG and it says AA #### operated by Air Tahiti, and it shows the 787-9 with 3x3x3 so I am correct in assuming it's the new Air Tahiti plane that is shown in the first post, correct?
When I try and book seats via AA I dont see an option, on Air Tahiti's website, I can see it under "extra services" but when I do, I get an error. Assuming I just need to call?
Last question is, my final destination is Vienna, but it was cheaper to book the legs separately. Does Air Tahiti work with any other partners (AF?) to check bags through if I bought a CDG > VIE ticket on the same day?

By the way, the plane was quiet and clean and the Air Tahiti First/Business service was excellent.

I can't seem to find anything that is direct, they all stop in one of AA's hubs. I did one way and round trips, no TN flights.

Programs: AA LT Plat; HH LT Diamond, Maître-plongeur des Muccis

Hi all I have a few questions. I'm flying LAX > CDG and it says AA #### operated by Air Tahiti, and it shows the 787-9 with 3x3x3 so I am correct in assuming it's the new Air Tahiti plane that is shown in the first post, correct?
When I try and book seats via AA I dont see an option, on Air Tahiti's website, I can see it under "extra services" but when I do, I get an error. Assuming I just need to call?
Last question is, my final destination is Vienna, but it was cheaper to book the legs separately. Does Air Tahiti work with any other partners (AF?) to check bags through if I bought a CDG > VIE ticket on the same day?

TN codeshares with Air France and SNCF rail, among others. You might be able to check baggage through to another airline, but I’d not bet on it - and TN ground staff can be downright surly. If you’re flying TN as an AA marketed flight you’ll get EQ instruments, but even more surliness in the ground.
For seats, call TN. (Exit seats can only be assigned at the airport.)

Just don’t call it Air Tahiti, please. Air Tahiti / VT is a local airline with ATR and smaller twins. Air Tahiti Nui is what you want to ask for. TN has three Boeing 787-9 and two Airbus A340-300 aircraft (the 340s will be gone later this year, one more Dreamliner will replace them). A340 is 2 x 4 x 2 in Moana Economy, 789 is 3 x 3 x 3.

I booked a revenue flight from NZ. The LAX to PPT sector is operated by TN. It seems I cannot earn AA miles on that sector, is that right? Does anyone know what miles I can earn?

You’d have to look at each program’s earning rules to determine whether or not you can earn miles in their program. That’s beyond the scope of this forum.

Sorry in advance if this is already covered. I have read all the posts and the wiki and can not find the information. Looking to book LAX-PPT in Business next June/July. In searching AA and Qantas all I see are Economy options.I looked on EF and searched Business - Award (F) and Business - Upgrade (Z). EF only shows 1 day with F availability and many days with Z seats.
Questions:
1) Can I trust EF to be accurate?
2) How does one book Z seats?
EF has Z as "Business Upgrade Only Using Air Tahiti Miles, not miles of other Airlines". So presume the only way to use Z is to book an Economy ticket then a Z upgrade with TN miles?
