Planespotters.net still shows 163 active MD-82/83 in the AA fleet.

I'm fairly certain that dfw-mci will be one of the last 3 routes to utilize the md 80. So I'll let you all know once that equipment changes. Hahaha

I'm on S80s LAX/AUS RT both ways next week. I think they are almost phased out of this route though. Funny since DL is adding this route exclusively with S80s (well "717"s lol).

Have a couple SEA-DFW-SAT later this year and one in Nov and one in Dec are currently showing as MD-80s for entire round trip. I do wonder when they'll be fully phased out.

STL > DFW still operating on S80's. To/From.
I know they operate the 737-8 on some flights but wasn't fortunate this time.

It seems like the dire condition of some US A320s and all their 734s required the retirement schedule of the mad dogs to be delayed a bit, the joys of mergers and cross fleeting...

There is just no reason why anyone should prefer an AA 737 over an MD-80. In Y, the MD-80 is so far superior that it's not even worth comparing (2-3 config in wider seats versus 3-3 and narrower). In F, it's likely a wash now that the excellent, wider F seats that the original AA B738s had are being replaced with narrower, less padded, less comfortable seats with a stupid "reticulating" recline mechanism.

Anything that keeps the MD-80s in the fleet longer is a good thing.

Those ole MD80's might not have the curb appeal everyone likes. But they are definitely a way more comfortable ride.

Curiously enough I recently started tracking noise levels mid-flight:
Seat 6E on an MD80 = 65db
Seat 6A on a 737 = 68db.
Also 11A on a 737 was 68db, so no real difference between F and MCE. I don't have MCE for an MD80 yet but should have it by this time next week.

I'm used to flying them on AS. 4 rows. Bet that makes a difference.
