Preferred plus vs preferred seating on MD80

Sorry to drag this old thread up - but I've got a very strange situation.
I can see the full seat map (On an MD80) both preferred and preferred plus and they're all selectable - when i click submit after selecting preferred seats it sticks but I get booted out after selecting preferred PLUS seats with a message saying "not available"
I'm BA G - and by the fact that I can select preferred seats for free I guess AA systems are recognizing it as Emerald.
Am i doing something wrong or are preferred plus AA Elite only?
