Exit row availablilty if I'm just 150 miles short of Gold

it really is a crap shoot. they did it for me last year when i was a few hundred miles short of PLT. i called AA a few days before my flight and explained that since i would qualify as PLT during the upcoming flight, would it be possible to simply make the switch in advance. the AAgent put me on hold for a few minutes, then came back and said "congratulations, you are now a PLT AAdvantage member".
No dice.

They should at least let you sit within 150 miles of the exit row if you are that close to Gold
