I've never gotten the VAN feature to work with my executive card; it's actually the only thing I still use my non-Exec Citi MC for in the past year.

I got an email notifying me that the VAN application would cease to work, but that the web version would still work, so while annoying (in general) it is not a huge complaint for me.

I didn't vote - and the poll is closed. But Citi and AA, add a likely one for the "I will cancel my card" line.

I used the Virtual Account Number feature quite often - and was about to use it today to make end of year charitable contributions after reviewing accounts, etc. so for me, this is a significant devaluation of services.

I like the EMV chip, forex waiver and Admirals Club membership, I do not like the nickle and dime cuts and difficulties (e.g. inching up credit limit with my requests even though I have another Citi card with high limit, the elimination of Virtual Account, the fact EMV is still "chip and signature" and not "chip and PIN"; add in no more lifetime miles, and it all subtracts from the card's value for me.

I totally agree JDiver. I didn't sign up in time to get the "lifetime miles" as I just signed up this year. It was still worth it for me this year as we lived in Europe this summer for 3 months and we spent a fortune and I wanted to get AA miles for the purchases as well as the forex waiver was nice. Also, I got 40,000 bonus miles to sign up for it.

However, I will cancel the card when the annual fee ends in May 2013. I already have an AMEX Platinum so I always can enter the Admiral's Clubs and I already have the other Platinum Citibank AAdvantage card to earn miles as well as the Citibank AAdvantage Business credit card.

Interestingly enough, I called yesterday to ask when I cancel if I can get the credit limit transferred over to my other Citibank card. I thought I read on one of these forums that you can move around your credit lines between cards.

I have a high limit on all these Citibank cards but I figured it doesn't hurt to add over the credit lines. Nope. The agent said that with any other card they could but that this Elite card can only have credit lines added to it from other cards but not the other way around. He said this card has a totally separate department which sounded a bit strange to me.

Does anyone know if this is true? Anyone cancel this card and get the credit line moved over to another Citibank card they have?

Add that several other cards grant Group 1, free bag, etc. and this card has lost much of its, er, aadvantage to me.
Errr... I guess I'm a bit perplexed as to what, exactly, the value of this card ever was to you?

You list your lifetime miles as 5MM, so not exactly sure what the relevance of additional lifetime miles was (additional SWUs I guess, but is that really worth the ongoing high annual fee?)

Additionally, as a perennial EXP, how exactly were "Group 1, free bag, etc." ever relevant benefits for you?

Finally, as I understand it, you have long held an Amex Platinum card, which essentially acts as an AC membership (and has a roughly equivalent, high annual fee) and fairly effectively mimics the primary benefit of the AA card (i.e. AC membership)

What was your value thesis for this card to begin with?

Regards

Changes to Virtual Account Numbers

Why were writing you

One of our servicing priorities at Citi is to make you aware of changes impacting your account. Effective 12/27/12, the downloadable version of our Virtual Account Numbers software will no longer be available. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

The good news is that we do have an alternative: a web-based version of Virtual Account Numbers available on Citi Account Online. To use our web-based version of Virtual Account Numbers, click on the Benefits & Services menu on Account Online.

If you have already downloaded the software on your computer, and attempt to launch it, you will be directed to the online version.

Hmm, just called to get my credit line doubled, and 20 minutes later, got it. Maybe they are opening up the flood gates with the card a bit?

The Platinum card does not give me the business benefits an AC membership gives me, and a MasterCard has about twice the acceptability worldwide as an American Express card. Many places (especially out the USA) will accept MC but will not accept AMEX (and AMEX doesn;t have an EMV chip option at this time).

No, this card no longer has access to any kind of Virtual Account Number, as I learned yesterday (see above). If I call up the Exec account the second option under Tools and Services is "Go to Document Center", whereas with my older World Elite card, it offers me "Virtual Account Number" (though I have to set access up now by having a code mailed to me and using that code).

I believe you can now call Amex Customer Services and get your Amex Plat with a EMV chip. It's still a chip and signature which is a bit pathetic but better than nothing. (A google search indicates this has only been the case since November this year).

I completely agree with you on your other points. A big reason I continue to choose the Citi card over the Amex Plat is that mastercard is accepted in so many more places than Amex, outside the US.

I can still generate VAN with my exec card. Actually I just tested it.

I remember someone posted here sometime ago asking about how to get VAN with the card.
I posted a kind of step-by-step instruction here for the web-based.
He was not able to get VAN from web but he was finally able to get VAN from the download version.

To clarify, I always select my other citi credit card first to launch the VAN web, then I change the card for generating VAN.

Instruction for generating VAN with the card

Are you implying that you can use Cit Virtual Account Numbers (VANs) with the Executive card? I beg to differ. I've tried it many times online, and it doesn't work. Naturally I have, and continue to use VANs with my AAdvantage PLT card and my Forward Card (so, it's not like I don't know what I'm doing). I've complained to customer service a couple of times on this and they say 'Virtual Account Numbers are not available for this card, but, we plan to make this feature available soon.'

If you have indeed used VANs with this card, then I would really appreciate it if you could explain how so, I am in dire need of that feature on this card.
Lesson 1: Don't believe what Citi Card representative tell you

If so, you may only see "Virtual Account Numbers are not available for this card" on your screen.
I haven't use VAN for the exec card yet but it looks work for me.
After login to your citi card account, you may find multiple citi cards under your IDs.
Don't specify and/or select your exec card even if your exec card isn't primary(listed at the top) for the account.
Just select "generate vertual account number" under "How do I" at the bottom of the screen.Make sure pop-up blocker turned off. Then select "Lauch now" for web-based version for testing.
After accept T&C, small window pop-up. Login again on the pop-up window.
Then select "select a card". You will see your multiple citi cards linked to your account.
For me , I am able to select my exec card for generating VAN.
If you can't find your exec card in the list, I can't help you.Good luck.
Above ----- part should be replaced by
1) select other citi card(non exec)
2)click on the Benefits & Services menu

Yup, that's what I did originally...

You know what's funny... I had tried those steps before to see if I could 'trick it' once into the application, but, my Exec MC never appeared. So, that's when I called customer service on it and they said 'Sorry, we don't support it for this card yet'.

However, given what you just said, it inspired me to instead of launching the application from the browser, to instead use the downloadable application. I ran that, logged in, and lo-and-behold my Executive MC was available!!

To further confirm that this does work, I generated a number and made a purchase using it. The result? I am happy to report that I do see my credit line has been reduced by the amount of the purchase on the VAN, likewise the merchant does indicate that the purchase was successful.

Now I just wish I could generate a couple of 'virtual billing addresses' for the card, and not just numbers.

But, so far I am quite happy. I wish I knew about this previously. Thanks for the info!

Confirmed today (for my own benefit): No MM counted for this card going forward. Cancelled. Membership year ended 10/1 and (after a supervisor escalation) credited back pro-rated amount (appox 3/4 of mem fee).

Hey? why quoting me from so long ago? I actually did go any fiddle around after speaking with you way-back-when, and got the VAN's to work.

I went to cancel the card today, 35 days after fee billed, and being informed by account specialist that I had 37 days to cancel for full refund. Well, now, this account specialist tells me that I was misinformed and in fact the fee is completely un-refundable.

Glad to see you got some pro-rated refund amount. The results of my escalation so far (didn't escalate to supervisor yet) is that they are going to pull my recorded call from that day and confirm that I was indeed told I had 37 days to cancel as told by the previous specialist. I can only hope that once it's confirmed I was misinformed that they allow me to cancel and get the full refund... but... in the mean time a little annoyed at the whole process, and the whole lack of accurate information provided by the 'specialist' representing Citi and this card specifically.

I revised my last post above a little
Were you able to use "web-based" VAN with the card?
It looks JDiver has the same issue you had before.

It is really odd for me why some are able to generate VAN with the card and others aren't.

It's because you are not "supposed" to be able to do it. If you just have this card you do not have the option at all. If you have another citi card in addition to this one, you can exploit a bug in their system to generate a VAN for this card by using the VAN generation link from the other card. I have no idea why they turned off VANs for the card, but they did.

As it is right now the only reason I'm keeping this thing is for the 10k EQM. The other benefits are really not that attractive if you already have status.
