Now that some folks have offered some suggestions, I am moving this to the Alaska Travel forum so others can take advantage.

Well I rented a 2wd Taurus and there was NO concern whatsoever. But where I am from if you had snow it would be a lot more dangerous. This snow is just way to easy to drive on. Portage was socked in but the wildlife park was worth the trip. Got a good bowl of chili at the Portage Glacier Lodge. Lots of Bald Eagles out on the road to Portage Glacier. All roads to all glaciers were closed. Seward is a wasted trip as there is NOTHING to do there except drink and unless I missed a hidden gem, it would drive you to drink. The air museum is small but the films are good. My son loved the simulator. Lots of places to go and take photos and Kincaid was probably one of the best places. For a/c watching you could not beat it. The ULU factory and the Berry place with the "chocolate" waterfall are real tourist traps. There is definetly alot to do but you need time to drive out to it. I could spend weeks taking photos here. Now for the LOOONGGG flight home. Oh someone needs to wake up and realize if flights are coming and going between 11 and 2 at night, they should keep a airline club open, that would be real helpful.

I guess I'm lucky!

(I don't know if the Portage Glacier Visitors' Center is open, but if so, that can also be combined on that day trip. (Granted, the distance from Anchorage to Seward is about 120 miles, but there's lots of spectacular scenery along the way.)

It looks like you'll have clear weather on the weekend, so check out http://www.gedds.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/ to see where you might go at night to catch the Aurora Borealis. (Looks like Friday night there will be high activity.) Have a great trip.
I've seen the Tidal Bore many dozens of times in all weathers and degrees of daylight.

Anchorage is not boring. There is plenty to do there. Plenty.

About the only "touristy" thing open in Seward this time of year is the Sealife Center ( http://www.alaskasealife.org/ ). Otherwise, the drinking works to occupy time until it's time to go fishing again.

Seward is a very different place during the summer, when the cruise ships are calling, the boat trips and railroad are running, the fishing is peaking, Exit Glacier becomes a nice hike again, 10,000+ people swarm in for the 4th of July festivities, etc, etc. However during the winter the place is just dead.
