I've seen this a few times. It's something like T110 to my departure as a 100K. At least 7 U class have been available, but it seems the upgrade processor hasn't run at all yet. Normally it runs somewhere between 0 and 2 hours past the upgrade window time when U is available. I was upgraded on my later connection at about T120.

Is this something new or that I should worry about? Changes in how U space works? Last time I called about the processor they said that it does its thing and they can't do anything with it.

This is business as usual. The upgrade professor is supposed to immediately run once U space opens up; however, in practice it may not always run in a timely manner or at all, and in those instances it is possible for pax to jump the waitlist / snag an upgrade etc.

Assuming U is open and the system has not run..
If you are on a GGU-eligible fare and outside of T-24, you could report the failure to AS CC, and then have AS Res remove you from the waitlist and apply a GGU, and then finally contact AS CC post trip to request the GGU be reissued due to the failure.

If you are on any fare and inside of T-24, you can try using the yet-to-be unpatched exploit of checking in via the website which usually offers an immediate upgrade into FC. If you have elite status, it is complimentary; if you have no elite status it will offer a paid upgrade.

does the professor automagically assign seats?

not sure that this is a “glitch” … but I’m not complaining about the outcome:
  • from T-72 to T-24.5, the flight status page showed me at 2 of 20+ for 5 F (and the food pre-order page for PC offered only the cheeseburger, which ain’t happenin’ since I don’t eat beef)
  • at T-25 the seat map changed to show 4 open (1F was no longer available)
  • at T-24.1 the food pre-order page brought up the F dinner options
  • I opened the PNR, saw no seat assignment, and picked 4F; got the “You must check in to select or change your seat”
  • I went to OLCI and saw I was in 1F, which is where I really wanted to be
so — did the person who was top of the list not have a seat preference in their profile? or is there another unpublished prioritization factor?

I've been upgraded without a seat assignment before, I don't think seat preferences do anything since it rarely gives me what I want. I'd much prefer if they upgraded without assigning seats though since those who care (me) can pick what they want and not be assigned a seat I don't that someone else would want.

No clue what is the factor in it choosing to assign a seat or not though, seems very random to me.

Yes.

The AS app isn't the most resilient with pulling or pushing updates, so try manually refreshing the app next time, or checking the website.

Just to put some closure on this, it did run around 12 hours late. No seat was assigned, it's outside the check-in window.

Also noticed I'm not getting upgrade emails anymore, but that's not a big issue for me as I'm already checking manually more frequently than I'd care to admit :p.

An update to this — checked with Alaska and they replied me today saying it’s a system error and they upgraded 75k over 100k first. So our suspicions were right. Given that they were upgraded while they were already on the plane I suspect less of a system error but more of an agent not processing it correctly.

Gave me some discount code for future flights. Wasn’t expecting anything, was just curious how the system worked.

Glad to hear of a positive resolution.. and yes that would be a gate agent error. 🤙🏻🥃

If boarding hasn’t started, try speaking with the GA?

yeah already on board — I’m not terribly concerned, 30 min flight anyways. But definitely something I’m keeping mind of in the next (long) flight.

Yes, when you are at the top of the waitlist, an preemptive and/or proactive approach may be the way to go at a sign of gate agents being busy and/or inexperienced.

If I'm an on an award ticket but the underlying fare class is N, does the upgrade processor distinguish between revenue fare class vs award fare class (in this case N)?

Nope.

AS revamped the fare buckets in 2021 (IIRC) and since that time award tickets book into the same fare buckets as revenue tickets. The UG WL metrics are solely: elite status, fare class, MM status, and time of booking. 🤙🏻🥃

That's good to hear--at least there is some benefit to paying more miles for the higher fare classes. It does seem that if you use enough miles for N class and above that you should be able to use a GGU.
